Bitcoin Wallet Dormant for 13 Years Emptied of All Its Bitcoins

A Bitcoin wallet inactive for 13 years, containing 500 BTC, has moved all its funds. The assets, worth around $500,000 in 2013, yielded an estimated 6160% return for the owner. Analysts from Lookonchain suggest the investor may have moved the holdings due to security concerns following a series of hacks targeting Coldcard hardware wallets. Data from CryptoQuant shows that on Monday, August 3rd, approximately 935 bitcoins dormant for a decade or more were moved—the largest single-day volume since March 20th. A significant spike in activity was also observed on July 31st from wallets inactive for 5-7 years, with about 6,388 BTC moved. Blockchain researchers believe this surge is directly linked to the Coldcard incidents, as owners of old wallets are mass-migrating funds to new addresses for safety. According to Galaxy Research, losses from the Coldcard hacks have exceeded $100 million as of August 4th, affecting roughly 7,300 addresses and resulting in the theft of 1,596 BTC. Security experts warn the attacks are ongoing, with potential losses possibly rising to 2,055 BTC. The first attack occurred on July 30th, stealing 594.5 BTC ($38 million) from 500 addresses. At least three subsequent waves have been recorded, with a fourth underway; on August 3rd, about 388.9 BTC was moved from 462 victim addresses in roughly 2.5 hours. The rate of wallet draining during these attacks is estimated to be 45 times higher than normal.
