Rain — a developer of infrastructure for stablecoin payments — has launched the Agentic Payments Alliance (APA), a consortium of companies that will work on developing standards for commerce using AI agents. Among the first participants are Visa, Mastercard, Circle, Solana, and Remitly. The alliance also includes Avalanche, Chainalysis, Fiserv, Fireblocks, Uniswap Labs, and Turnkey.
The alliance will explore how AI agents will be able to make payments on behalf of users. The primary focus will be on agent authorization, fraud protection, identification, as well as the transfer of bonuses and rewards within loyalty programs.
APA will operate as a collaborative initiative managed by the founding companies. Participants plan to conduct research, develop common standards, and test solutions for identifying and authorizing AI agents. The alliance will also address regulatory aspects of payments made by agents on behalf of users.
Rain has already developed its own Agent Control Layer and Scoped Cards systems. These allow users to grant AI agents access to payment data while simultaneously restricting access to funds. Alliance participants will also gain early access to the Rain Agentic Startup Program, which supports startups developing solutions for commerce via AI agents.
