UK Court Allows $172M Bitcoin Theft Case as Husband Accuses Wife of Stealing Crypto via CCTV
A UK High Court judge has allowed a $172 million lawsuit to proceed, in which a husband accuses his wife of stealing 2,323 Bitcoin from his hardware wallet. The husband claims his wife used home CCTV cameras to secretly obtain his 24-word recovery phrase, enabling her to transfer the funds without his consent in August 2023. The Bitcoin, worth $60 million at the time, has since appreciated significantly.
The wife sought dismissal, arguing the initial claim applied only to physical property, which the judge acknowledged. However, the case will continue under other legal claims. The dispute also involves a personal conflict, with the husband having pleaded guilty to assaulting his wife after discovering the alleged theft.
This case highlights the legal challenges in applying traditional property laws to digital assets like cryptocurrency. The final ruling is expected to set an important precedent for future crypto-related disputes.
