Rain, a developer of infrastructure for stablecoin payments, has launched the Agentic Payments Alliance (APA) — a consortium of companies that will focus on developing standards for commerce using AI agents. Among the first participants are Visa, Mastercard, Circle, Solana, and Remitly. The alliance also includes Avalanche, Chainalysis, Fiserv, Fireblocks, Uniswap Labs, and Turnkey.
The alliance will explore how AI agents can make payments on behalf of users. Primary focus will be on agent authorization, fraud prevention, identification, as well as the transfer of bonuses and rewards within loyalty programs.
APA will operate as a collaborative initiative managed by the founding companies. Participants plan to conduct research, develop common standards, and test solutions for the identification and authorization of AI agents. The alliance will also address regulatory aspects of payments made by agents on behalf of users.
Rain has already developed its own Agent Control Layer and Scoped Cards system. These allow AI agents to be provided with payment data while restricting access to funds. Alliance participants will also receive early access to the Rain Agentic Startup Program, which supports startups developing solutions for commerce via AI agents.
