BIP-110 Fork Resulting from Bitcoin Network Split Falls 18 Blocks Behind

cryptonews.ruPublished on 2026-08-09Last updated on 2026-08-09

Abstract

A fork of the Bitcoin network, created by a split over BIP-110 implementation, is now 18 blocks behind the dominant chain. The fork was triggered after Bitcoin surpassed the BIP-110 signaling threshold at block 961632. Proponents of BIP-110, including Bitcoin Knots creator Luke Dashjr and anonymous developer Daton Om, have issued warnings, stating the Bitcoin network is under attack by hostile miners and urging users to upgrade software to avoid accepting fraudulent transactions. The mining pool Roughnecks, supporting BIP-110, mined competing blocks at heights 961632 and 961633, but remains on a minority chain with drastically reduced hash power. A recent difficulty adjustment to 127.48 trillion has made mining new blocks on this chain exceedingly slow. Notably, hash power associated with Ocean Mining—closely linked to the BIP-110 camp—mined a block (961634) on the dominant chain, indicating a lack of unified support for the fork. Some BIP-110 supporters express defeat, while others discuss potentially changing the minority chain's proof-of-work algorithm. Dashjr asserts that updated full nodes are protected from the perceived attacks, framing the situation as a conflict between updated and vulnerable network participants.

After two years of fierce debates, Bitcoin surpassed the BIP-110 signaling threshold at block 961632, and now reality speaks for itself as $BTC blocks continue to pile up. BIP-110 supporters appear stunned by the outcome, while Bitcoin Knots creator Luke Dashjr has issued a statement to everyone.

"Important warning: If you have not yet upgraded to Bitcoin Knots 29.3.knots20260508 (or 29.4), you are now vulnerable to double-spend attacks assisted by [Foundry and Antpool]," Dashjr wrote on social network X. In bold, he also added: "Upgrade as soon as possible to avoid accepting fake bitcoins."

Da Ton Om, an anonymous BIP-110 developer, also spoke out on X and further emphasized:

"The Bitcoin network is currently under attack by hostile miners."

Roughnecks Gains Momentum Again as Main Bitcoin Chain Pulls Ahead

As previously reported by Bitcoin.com News, the BIP-110-supporting mining company Roughnecks directly competed with Antpool for block 961632. Antpool won the race on the dominant Bitcoin chain, while the competing block 961632 from Roughnecks remained on the BIP-110 version. Since then, Roughnecks has managed to mine another block on the minority chain at height 961633.

Adding another twist to an already chaotic situation, Bitcoin's mining difficulty also adjusted at height 961632, rising to 127.48 trillion just as the blockchain split into competing versions. This difficulty jump makes life particularly hard for the BIP-110 minority chain.

Image source: mempool.kilombino.com, showing two consecutive BIP-110 blocks mined by Roughnecks.

Bitcoin's mining difficulty does not magically decrease when the majority of miners leave, meaning Roughnecks and its allies are still trying to solve blocks at the same target difficulty of 127.48 trillion, but with only a tiny fraction of the main chain's hashpower. Unless significantly more hashpower joins the split-off chain, blocks will appear at agonizingly slow intervals, effectively leaving BIP-110 stuck waiting for enough blocks for the next difficulty adjustment.

Hashpower Linked to Ocean Mining Breaks Ranks on Dominant Chain

Another surprise regarding the split: Simple Mining, a major hosting provider from Iowa directing hashpower to Ocean Mining, mined block No. 961634 on the dominant chain. Simple Mining uses Ocean's DATUM system, which allows individual miners and hosters to create their own block templates, including choosing whether to set the BIP-110 version bit.

This makes the block particularly noteworthy. Ocean is closely associated with the BIP-110 camp: Dashjr holds the CTO position of the pool, and a large portion of the early signals supporting the proposal came from Ocean and DATUM miners. Yet, Simple Mining's block landed squarely on the dominant Bitcoin chain — another sign that hashpower linked to Ocean is not marching in step with the BIP-110 minority fork.

Roughnecks Continues 'Wildcat Mining' on Split-Off Chain

Roughnecks Mining Division 110 celebrated successfully mining two consecutive BIP-110 blocks — 961632 and 961633 — comparing this achievement to "wildcat oil drilling" on oilfields, where speculators make large bets on untested plots in hopes of striking oil. Whether this holds true remains to be seen. After Roughnecks published, a Dashjr user reposted this post on X.

BIP-110 Supporters Insist Bitcoin Is Broken and Are Prepared to Change PoW Algorithm for Minority Chain

BIP-110 supporters have not taken this outcome well. "RIP, Bitcoin. You've just become another captured speculative asset. Sorry, Satoshi, we failed you," lamented one X user and BIP-110 supporter under the handle BTCbello. One of the most active and recognizable BIP-110 proponents, Matthew Kratter, acknowledged that it would now take "a real miracle" for the BIP-110 chain to overtake the main chain.

Dashjr also informed users that "BIP-110 is active on the Bitcoin network. Malicious pools and miners are attacking the network, deceiving old nodes and light wallets. Users using updated full nodes (i.e., versions 20260508) are unaffected."

Meanwhile, other BIP-110 supporters still signaled willingness to change the minority chain's mining algorithm. "We have nothing to lose by starting from scratch with a POW algorithm. There's huge potential and freedom in this — the chance to clearly see what just happened and make the necessary adjustments to preserve the system. This is Independence Day for sound, decentralized money," wrote user Maitreya Lockwood in an X account in response to Kratter's latest video on the topic.

$20k Signing Fee + $30k Monthly Salary: The Story Behind Pump.fun Poaching FOMO's Corner

The meme market has become increasingly fragmented, with a significant divide between overseas and Chinese users in terms of ecosystem and trading tools. Recently, a piece of gossip spread within overseas meme communities: Pump.fun, the largest token launch platform, is allegedly offering lucrative incentives to poach users from its competitor FOMO. According to a leaked agreement, eligible users are reportedly offered a one-time $20,000 signing bonus plus a $30,000 monthly salary to migrate their funds and trading activity exclusively to Pump.fun, close their FOMO accounts, and meet specific trading volume requirements. This aggressive move highlights FOMO's rapid rise. Launched just over a year ago, FOMO has secured $94 million in funding and, crucially, its revenue over the past 30 days has surpassed that of Uniswap and Phantom. Its market share in trading bots has even overtaken GMGN to become the leader. FOMO's success is attributed to its "social-first" product design, featuring a profit leaderboard and a feed tracking top traders' activities—effectively creating "trading celebrities" that users follow. In response, Pump.fun has recently upgraded its app to replicate these social features, shifting its homepage focus to trader activity feeds. The platform's founder has actively welcomed prominent meme traders. This competition underscores a major shift in the overseas meme market: the battleground has moved from launch tools and liquidity to a fight for attention and influence. The market is now dominated by a "网红带货模式" (influencer-driven model), where platforms compete to sign the most influential trading Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), who have become the new carriers of market consensus. While this mirrors early competition in livestreaming platforms, it signals a potential risk for the meme space: losing the organic, community-driven vitality that originally fueled its growth, as competition centers increasingly on a concentrated group of trading influencers.

The Inside Story of Pump.fun Poaching FOMO's Top Users: $20K Signing Bonus + $30K Monthly Salary

Pump.fun, a leading meme coin launchpad, is reportedly offering exclusive contracts to lure high-value users and traders away from its competitor FOMO. The alleged agreement includes a $20,000 signing bonus, a $30,000 monthly stipend, and requires users to migrate funds, use a dedicated wallet, and permanently close their FOMO accounts. This aggressive move highlights a significant shift in the competitive landscape of the meme market. FOMO, a multi-chain mobile-focused trading platform launched in 2025, has rapidly grown to challenge incumbents. Data shows its 30-day revenue recently surpassed Uniswap and Phantom, and it has overtaken GMGN to become the market leader in trading bot share. FOMO's success is largely attributed to its "social-first" design, featuring profit leaderboards and feeds that track top traders' moves. This effectively creates and promotes "meme trading influencers," turning successful traders into attention hubs that drive platform engagement and user growth. Recognizing this model's power, Pump.fun recently updated its app to replicate similar social features. The competition for influential traders signals the meme market's evolution into a "influencer-driven" phase. Platform growth now hinges less on technical features and more on securing key personalities who can attract followers and trading volume. While a standard competitive tactic, this trend risks centralizing attention around a few individuals and potentially stifling the organic, community-driven culture that originally fueled the meme coin ecosystem.

The Future Outlook of Bitcoin

Bitcoin: A Mid-2026 Perspective Bitcoin analyst Will Clemente assesses the asset's outlook, arguing that despite a challenging period, it now presents a compelling long-term value opportunity. The current bear market, while less severe in peak drawdown than 2022, has been difficult due to a lack of clear catalysts, underperformance versus assets like gold, and persistent ETF outflows. However, key negative pressures are showing signs of abating. Digital Asset Treasuries (DATs), a major source of sell pressure during the bull market, are slowing accumulation or shifting strategies. While quantum computing remains a long-term concern, its risk is likely significantly priced in at current levels. Fundamentally, the Bitcoin network remains decentralized and healthy, with a robust global node distribution. Although hash rate has declined as miners pivot to AI/HPC, the network's difficulty adjustment ensures security, and the resilience suggests a diverse, non-public mining base. Valuation metrics indicate Bitcoin is in deeply undervalued territory. It is consolidating near its 2021 highs, below the 200-week EMA, with weekly RSI showing a bullish divergence from oversold levels. The MVRV ratio is at historically low levels, signaling the market's aggregate cost basis is near the current price. Long-term holders have resumed accumulation, and trading volume across spot, ETF, and derivatives markets has dried up to multi-year lows. Implied volatility is cheap, and futures basis is compressed, reflecting a complete lack of speculative interest. The core bullish thesis hinges on seller exhaustion. After a year of selling from DATs and ETFs, and with quantum risks largely discounted, the pool of remaining motivated sellers appears limited. A potential catalyst could be steady, price-insensitive inflows from large institutions adding small strategic allocations to portfolios for diversification, given Bitcoin's recent low correlation with other assets. Conclusion: Bitcoin is considered "cheap" with most risks priced in. While a final leg down is possible, the network is healthy, and long-term holders are buying. Strategies include dollar-cost averaging, waiting for a definitive catalyst or price reversal, or entering a position now while using inexpensive options to hedge against further downside. The current setup suggests an interesting period ahead for the orange coin.
