How Are Crypto Scams Using Offensive AI Memes To Create New Rug Pulls?

ccn.comPublished on 2025-12-30Last updated on 2025-12-30

Abstract

A growing ecosystem of crypto scams is leveraging deliberately offensive, AI-generated memes—such as violent or racist parody characters—to promote fraudulent memecoins, primarily on platforms like Instagram. These shocking images, including AI-generated versions of public figures, are designed to exploit social media algorithms by driving high engagement through outrage or humor. This increased visibility is then used to lure investors into new tokens, often launched on low-barrier platforms like Pump.fun, where the vast majority are rug pulls or pump-and-dump schemes. Researchers note that the more disturbing the content, the more effectively it spreads, enabling scammers to profit from unsuspecting users who react to the memes. The trend coincides with reduced content moderation on major social platforms and raises concerns about the weaponization of AI for financial exploitation.

Key Takeaways

  • Offensive AI content is being weaponised for crypto scams.
  • High engagement from outrage or humour boosts visibility.
  • Looser content moderation on major platforms and discussions.

A growing ecosystem of crypto scams is being promoted through deliberately offensive, AI-generated images and videos on social media platforms, particularly Instagram.

As the volume of offensive imagery accelerates heading into the new year, questions are being raised about how scammers are being rewarded for this behaviour — and why little appears to be done to stop it.

The Offensive Meme-to-Memecoin Pipeline

Anonymous creators on social media are rapidly generating violent or racist parody characters, many of which are directly linked to newly launched memecoins.

“These memes are not emerging organically,” said an internet culture researcher writing in the Financial Times under the name Etymology Nerd.

“They are being manufactured specifically to manipulate engagement and, ultimately, to extract money from unsuspecting investors.”

According to the report, scammers exploit a feedback loop in which shocking imagery generates high levels of comments, shares, and watch time — all metrics favoured by social media algorithms.

That visibility is then used to promote new tokens, often registered within minutes on low-barrier platforms such as Pump.fun.

Shock-Factor Rug Pulls

Among the most prominent examples are AI-generated characters such as “Kirkinator,” a cyborg parody depicting the late U.S. political activist Charlie Kirk.

Another example is a fictional android version of George Floyd, known as “George Droyd,” which gained significant traction across social media platforms.

Both characters were used to promote short-lived tokens that spiked sharply in value before collapsing through rug pulls.

“The more disturbing the content, the more likely it is to spread,” the Financial Times writer said.

“Violence, slurs, and transgressive imagery are being used as tools to game the algorithm.”

Even users with no interest in cryptocurrency inadvertently assist scammers by reacting with shock or amusement.

Increased engagement drives visibility, making it more likely that the associated token will reach active traders.

AI Memes and Adult Content

The rise of offensive AI-generated memes coincides with broader discussions about loosening restrictions on generative AI models.

In October, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced that the company would soon release a version of ChatGPT capable of providing “erotica for verified adults.”

While Altman reiterated that guardrails and safety remain a priority, some observers worry that reduced restrictions could enable more harmful uses of AI in the future.

Social media platforms such as X and Instagram also play a significant role in content moderation.

Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, rolled back some moderation policies this year following Donald Trump’s presidency.

These changes focused on allowing more “free speech” and fewer restrictions on culture-war-related topics.

Pump.fun and Scam Activity

In May, a report from Solidus Labs found that 98.6% of tokens launched on Pump.fun were created for rug pulls or pump-and-dump schemes.

Since launching at the beginning of 2024, the platform has seen more than seven million tokens created. Of those, only 97,000 maintained liquidity above $1,000.

Following the report, Pump.fun spokesperson Troy Gravitt disputed the findings:

“What Solidus Labs lacks is a basic understanding of memecoins,” he said. “98% of memecoins — like NFTs, tweets, Instagram posts, trading cards, and most art — are worth little in the long run.”

“That’s precisely the point. What is important is the availability of a functioning marketplace connecting motivated buyers and sellers, and the underlying cultural expression to which the market assigns value over time.”

Related Questions

QHow are crypto scammers using offensive AI-generated memes to promote their schemes?

ACrypto scammers are creating deliberately offensive, AI-generated images and videos, such as violent or racist parody characters, to generate high engagement on social media. This high engagement, driven by shock or outrage, boosts the visibility of their posts through platform algorithms. They then use this visibility to promote newly launched memecoins, often registered on low-barrier platforms like Pump.fun, which are frequently used for rug pulls or pump-and-dump schemes.

QWhat role do social media platforms play in the spread of these crypto scams?

ASocial media platforms, particularly Instagram and X, play a significant role by hosting and sometimes amplifying this content due to their algorithms favoring high-engagement posts. The article notes that Meta (parent company of Instagram and Facebook) rolled back some content moderation policies this year, allowing more 'free speech' and fewer restrictions on culture-war-related topics, which may have contributed to the increased visibility of these offensive memes and associated scams.

QWhat did the report from Solidus Labs find about tokens launched on Pump.fun?

AA report from Solidus Labs found that 98.6% of tokens launched on Pump.fun were created for rug pulls or pump-and-dump schemes. Since its launch in early 2024, over seven million tokens have been created on the platform, but only 97,000 maintained liquidity above $1,000, indicating that the vast majority are scams or fail quickly.

QHow do offensive AI memes exploit social media algorithms?

AOffensive AI memes exploit social media algorithms by generating high levels of engagement—such as comments, shares, and watch time—through shocking, violent, or transgressive imagery. This engagement signals to the algorithms that the content is popular, leading to increased visibility and reach. Scammers leverage this visibility to promote associated cryptocurrency tokens to a larger audience, including active traders.

QWhat are some examples of AI-generated characters used in these crypto scams?

AExamples of AI-generated characters used in these scams include 'Kirkinator,' a cyborg parody of the late U.S. political activist Charlie Kirk, and a fictional android version of George Floyd known as 'George Droyd.' These characters were used to promote short-lived tokens that experienced sharp price increases before collapsing through rug pulls, defrauding investors.

Global Stock Market's Storm Center: South Korea's Stock Market De-leveraging Is Largely Complete

Storm's Eye: South Korean Market De-leveraging Nears Completion The recent sharp correction in South Korean equities, with the KOSPI index dropping 32% from its June high, has been a key trigger for global tech stock volatility. The core driver was not a fundamental shift but a forced de-leveraging process within the market's unique structure, which is now largely complete. Two main leverage channels amplified the sell-off: 1. **Leveraged ETFs:** Their size, proportionally four times larger than in the U.S., peaked near $50 billion. Their mandatory daily rebalancing mechanism created a vicious cycle of "price drop → forced selling → further drop." Approximately 75% of this excess has been unwound, shrinking to $26 billion, with regulatory curbs now blocking new inflows. 2. **Hedge Fund Leverage:** Using swaps to magnify exposure, hedge funds saw their net long positioning fall by over 50% from peak levels. The most intense phase of this institutional de-leveraging is over. In contrast, **retail margin debt** poses minimal systemic risk. At 0.5% of market cap, it is far lower than in the U.S. or China, lacks automatic triggers, and is concentrated in smaller stocks. The conclusion: the high-leverage structures most prone to "chain-reaction selling" have been substantially cleared. The market is transitioning from a liquidity-driven crash to one priced more on fundamentals. The article argues that the AI trend—centered on Korean memory chips—remains intact. This episode represents a painful but necessary clearing of crowded trades, not the end of the AI revolution. For investors, the key question is conviction in the long-term AI direction; if the trend is real, current volatility is a cost of entry, not a terminal risk.
