Cloudflare Introduces AI-Based Wallets Designed for Unmanned Purchases

Cloudflare has announced AI-powered "Wallets X" designed to enable autonomous agent commerce. The system addresses a key barrier: AI agents currently cannot easily identify themselves or pay for API access and digital content on their own, often requiring human intervention. The solution involves two linked wallets. "Account wallets" are owned and funded by humans, who set spending rules. "Agent wallets" are owned by the AI agents themselves and operate via API keys. Each agent wallet has a spending limit drawn from its linked human account, acting as a safety net—e.g., a $100 weekly limit for AI computations. This allows agents to independently explore and pay for services within their budget. The payment technology is based on the x402 protocol, which attaches micropayments in stablecoins directly to standard web requests. This works with Cloudflare's recently announced Monetization Gateway, aiming to create a "driverless marketplace" for AI services. To solve the identity problem, Cloudflare introduces `cloudflare.pay`, a system linking a wallet to an account. This allows an agent to optionally identify itself (e.g., `research.example.cloudflare.pay`), helping merchants distinguish between bots, AI agents, and humans. The identity system builds on the existing Web Bot Auth technology. Cloudflare cites the growing volume of bot traffic as a key driver, betting that equipping AI agents with wallets, spending limits, and optional identity will smooth the transition to more autonomous agent commerce. The company is starting with basic stablecoin funding and withdrawal in supported regions, with further rollout details to follow as related standards develop.

Airwallex Invests in Metal: How Stablecoins Reconnect with the Real Financial System?

Airwallex Invests in Metal: How Stablecoins Connect Back to the Real Financial System? Airwallex, a global financial platform for businesses, has completed a $3.2 billion Series H funding round at an $11 billion valuation. Concurrently, it co-led the seed round for Metal, a "tokenized financial products infrastructure" project, becoming its first design partner. This move signals Airwallex's strategic shift beyond traditional cross-border payments. It aims to leverage its decade of experience in licenses, local payment networks, and API infrastructure to address a new challenge: facilitating the entry of stablecoins, tokenized assets, and AI agents into enterprise financial systems. This involves handling critical functions like authorization, compliance, currency exchange, fiat on/off-ramps, and final settlement. Metal positions itself not merely as another stablecoin payment solution but as a compliant settlement layer (Layer 1 blockchain) designed for regulated financial institutions. It targets a broader scope of tokenized financial products, including stablecoins, tokenized deposits, and securities. The core challenge it addresses is connecting efficient on-chain assets with the complex realities of corporate finance, such as multi-currency bank accounts, securities, compliance checks, and local regulations. Airwallex's investment, alongside its founder-backed fund Capital49, provides Metal with crucial real-world infrastructure: access to local payment networks covering 200+ countries and 90+ currencies. This partnership aims to bridge the gap between on-chain efficiency and off-chain, institution-ready settlement. The announcement aligns with Airwallex's broader product direction, which includes an AI-native financial platform (T:0) and a wallet infrastructure for AI agent commerce (Airi). The combined vision is an integrated infrastructure that can handle the speed and cost benefits of on-chain assets while seamlessly managing compliance, authorization, and fiat connectivity required for global business operations and the emerging AI agent economy.

In the Era of Agent Users, Where Does Crypto Value Flow?

Title: Who Makes Money from Agents? The rise of AI Agents as potential blockchain users raises a crucial question: if they become the next billion users, who will capture the value? Traditional crypto value capture theories—like "fat protocols" (where value accrues to the base layer) and "fat applications" (where value accrues to user-facing apps)—assume human users who value UX, brand, and convenience. Agents, however, operate differently: they interact via APIs, have no brand loyalty, and can switch services with near-zero cost. This shift could disrupt existing value flows. Applications might become "headless," offering their routing and infrastructure as APIs to Agents. Alternatively, Agents might bypass intermediaries entirely, allowing protocols to regain value capture ("fat protocols" reborn). A more extreme scenario is that Agents, being purely rational and cost-sensitive, could commoditize the entire stack, compressing margins toward marginal cost and turning crypto into a low-margin utility. However, Agents may not just amplify existing activities; they could enable entirely new ones—like continuous, sub-penny portfolio rebalancing, machine-to-machine commerce, and new market types only viable at automated speeds. This expands the economic pie rather than just redistributing it. Ultimately, the key question for builders is: what will make an Agent return to your service instead of a cheaper alternative? The answer may not be UX but factors like liquidity, latency, settlement guarantees, or a yet-unnamed business model. As humans and Agents will coexist as users, value capture may split: "fat apps" for human-facing services, and a new, evolving model for the Agent-dominated layer.
