Pro-Cryptocurrency PAC Wins Primaries but Loses $2M Race in Florida

A pro-cryptocurrency political action committee (PAC), Fairshake, achieved mixed results in recent U.S. primary elections, spending millions to influence races ahead of the 2026 midterms. Fairshake's affiliated PACs, Protect Progress and Defend American Jobs, supported candidates in Alaska, Florida, and Wyoming, spending approximately $3.6 million. Four out of five candidates backed by their ads won their primaries or advanced. These included Democrat Lois Frankel in Florida, Republican Nick Begich in Alaska, Republican Sydney Gruters in Florida, and Representative Harriet Hageman in Wyoming's Senate race. However, a high-profile $2 million negative ad campaign by Protect Progress failed to defeat Democrat Oliver Gilbert in Florida's 24th District. Gilbert won despite the ads, which he attributed to "Trump's techie-billionaire friends" and "crypto-scammers trying to buy a Democratic primary." A PAC representative defended the ads' factual accuracy. Fairshake, with a reported $193 million war chest, has spent over $130 million in the 2024 cycle supporting pro-crypto candidates and opposing critics. A spokesperson stated the PAC is "just getting started" to build the largest pro-crypto Congress in history. The outcomes could impact future crypto legislation, such as the pending CLARITY Act, as the 2026 elections may shift congressional control and determine which parties advance or block industry-related bills.

PAC funded by Ripple and Coinbase spent $2,000,000 on Florida elections, barely mentioning crypto assets

A political action committee (PAC) called Protect Progress, which is affiliated with the Fairshake organization primarily funded by Coinbase and Ripple Labs, has spent over $2 million on advertising opposing a Democratic candidate in Florida's 24th congressional district. The ads target Oliver Gilbert, a Democratic primary candidate who had not taken a notable stance on digital assets before the campaign. Gilbert's opponent, Florida state Senator Shevrin Jones, has received a "strongly supports" rating from the crypto-advocacy group Stand With Crypto. The incumbent, Representative Frederica Wilson, who has voted against crypto-related bills in Congress, has endorsed Gilbert. In response to the ads, Gilbert criticized "tech billionaires... friends of [Donald] Trump" for backing "crypto grifters trying to buy the Democratic primary." Separately, the Protect Progress PAC spent over $150,000 supporting Representative Lois Frankel's re-election in Florida's 23rd district. An affiliated PAC, Defend American Jobs, reported spending a total of $1.5 million on ads supporting Republican candidates in Alaska, Florida, and Wyoming. These expenditures are part of a broader strategy by Fairshake, which reported a $193 million war chest earlier this year, to influence the 2026 midterm elections by supporting both Democratic and Republican candidates. To date, Fairshake's affiliated PACs have directed over $82 million into primary and special elections. The outcome of these primaries will help determine which party controls the House and Senate in the next Congress.

Hyperliquid and other DeFi services are targeting the US market. What's the problem

The consideration of the crucial US crypto market regulation bill, the CLARITY Act, has been postponed to September in the Senate. However, even if passed, it will not address the regulation of fast-growing crypto industry segments like Decentralized Finance (DeFi). Therefore, popular DeFi projects such as Hyperliquid and Morpho are lobbying US regulators for specific exemptions and clarifications to allow them to operate in the US market. The CLARITY Act aims to clarify jurisdictional oversight between the SEC and CFTC for the spot crypto market but will only indirectly affect DeFi. Hyperliquid lobbyists, through the Hyperliquid Policy Center, are engaging with the CFTC and SEC. They propose allowing regulated US companies to offer clients perpetual futures trading on Hyperliquid's public blockchain and seek exemptions for developers of non-custodial applications. A key regulatory challenge is that Hyperliquid's on-chain model, where users self-custody assets, doesn't fit existing laws designed for regulated intermediaries. Further complexity arises as Hyperliquid offers perpetual futures tied not just to crypto and commodities but also to stocks like SpaceX, potentially falling under SEC jurisdiction. Simultaneously, the CLARITY Act largely overlooks decentralized lending. Morpho, whose deposits have nearly doubled to over $12 billion, has met with the SEC to discuss the regulatory status of crypto vaults. The SEC has warned that some vault operations may constitute securities activities and is considering rule changes. While platforms like Coinbase have integrated Morpho, its counsel suggests that passing the CLARITY Act could boost traditional finance's confidence in engaging with on-chain lending pools.
