Web3 Payments Track Research Report (Part 1): A Panoramic Deconstruction of Industry Background, Protocol Standards, Major Player Positioning, and Global Regulatory Dynamics

Web3 Payments: Industry Transformation, Key Players, and Regulatory Evolution (Part 1) This report provides a panoramic analysis of the Web3 payments sector, marking its transition from narrative-driven to infrastructure-focused growth. The 2025-2026 period is characterized by stablecoins surpassing the combined transaction volume of Visa and Mastercard, reaching approximately $33 trillion in on-chain settlements. This surge is fueled by their structural advantages in cost, speed, and accessibility for cross-border and B2B payments, addressing pain points in traditional finance. Stablecoins, primarily USD-pegged and dominated by USDT and USDC, have become core payment infrastructure. Their use cases are expanding beyond crypto exchanges into real-world commerce, global payroll, and remittances. User experience is evolving through two parallel paths: **account abstraction** (via standards like ERC-4337 and EIP-7702) abstracts gas and key management for self-custody users, while **payment rail integration** by giants like Stripe, PayPal, Visa, and Mastercard embeds stablecoins seamlessly into familiar checkout flows for mainstream users. Concurrently, the rise of dedicated **"stablechains"** (e.g., Stable) aims to optimize infrastructure specifically for stablecoin payments, using them as native gas tokens to ensure cost predictability and priority. Major payment processors are aggressively entering the space through acquisitions, partnerships, and proprietary stablecoins (e.g., PYUSD), strategically positioning themselves at this new infrastructure layer. This infrastructure shift coincides with clarifying global regulation. Key developments include the U.S. GENIUS Act establishing a federal framework, the EU's MiCA regime coming into full effect, and Hong Kong positioning itself as a compliant testing ground in Asia-Pacific. The convergence of scalable infrastructure, clear regulations, and the emerging demand from AI Agents for machine-to-machine micropayments is defining the next phase of competition over protocol standards, value accumulation layers, and market definition.

RWA Weekly: Ten European Financial Institutions Establish Tokenized Asset Cooperative; Ondo Launches New Execution Network Ondo Network

RWA Weekly: European Banks Form Tokenized Asset Cooperative; Ondo Launches New Execution Network Ondo Network Covering July 24-31, 2026, the RWA sector saw a steady on-chain total value locked (TVL) of $36.8 billion, with holder count hitting a record high. However, stablecoin transfer volumes fell sharply (~30%), indicating low on-chain settlement demand. Key regulatory moves include South Korea advancing stablecoin legislation and a push to scrap crypto taxes, Kenya lowering capital requirements for stablecoin issuers, and Zimbabwe approving seven projects for its crypto sandbox. In project developments, BIS-led Project Agorá successfully tested cross-border payments with tokenized funds across six currencies. Ten major European financial institutions formed the RL1 blockchain cooperative to build tokenized asset infrastructure. Other notable updates: Aviva launched a tokenized dollar liquidity fund on XRPL, POSCO International tokenized commercial invoices on Injective, and a Brazilian farmer used tokenized cattle as collateral for a loan. Additional progress includes BNY Mellon migrating its core transfer agent operations to blockchain, Securitize gaining SEC investment advisor registration, and Tether’s compliant stablecoin USA₮ launching on Celo. Ondo Finance introduced Ondo Network, a new execution layer focused on speed and privacy, moving away from its initial chain plans. An analysis highlights that despite the growing scale of on-chain RWAs (~$32B), approximately 90% remain underutilized in DeFi, pointing to a critical challenge in unlocking liquidity and fostering real-world application beyond mere issuance.

A7 to Provide Unique Expertise on Stablecoin Settlement to the Market

Beginning September 1, 2026, Russia's "On Digital Currencies and Digital Rights" law will establish rules for cryptocurrency circulation, significantly expanding tools for importers and exporters. Company A7, a user of the largest ruble-pegged stablecoin A7A5, has announced its readiness to share its unique expertise in digital asset operations with foreign trade participants. According to Oleg Ogienko, Director of Government Relations and International Ties for the A7A5 project, the company's specialists have developed significant expertise in legally formalizing such transactions, compliance, currency control, and interacting with infrastructure participants. Following the law's enactment, A7 will continue applying this expertise for client operations and plans to adapt its business processes as the Bank of Russia issues related regulatory acts. The Bank of Russia clarified that exporters and importers will be able to conduct cross-border settlements in digital currency either through intermediaries or directly, though domestic use of such assets will remain restricted. All requirements for operators and settlement participants will be detailed in the regulator's subordinate acts. A7 had previously highlighted the high degree of transaction freedom in foreign trade as a key advantage of Russia's developing crypto-asset regulation model, while noting limitations for individuals and a banking-centric system that could hinder market growth.
