Abstract

Korean Stock Market Plummets Amid Global Sell-Off, Presidential Office Responds South Korea's stock market experienced a sharp decline on Thursday. The benchmark KOSPI index fell over 4%, with major components SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics dropping over 8% and 5%, respectively. The sell-off quickly spread to related Hong Kong ETFs. The trigger was weak forward guidance from U.S. memory chip giants SanDisk and Western Digital, whose revenue forecasts fell short of lofty market expectations despite strong prior-quarter results. Their subsequent stock plunge led to a sell-off in Asian semiconductor stocks, highlighting the region's dependence on U.S. market sentiment. Since hitting a record high in mid-June, the KOSPI has fallen over 21% in about a month. In response to market volatility, the South Korean government has implemented measures, including raising cash margin requirements for single-stock leveraged ETFs. This led to a significant drop in their trading volume. A senior presidential official stated the focus is on closely monitoring the situation and formulating appropriate countermeasures. Analyst views on the market outlook diverge: while Morgan Stanley sees the sell-off as a buying opportunity due to low valuations, others like China Securities warn of continued high volatility as leverage unwinds. Looking ahead, analysts expect the global memory chip sector to remain in a high-sensitivity phase. However, Goldman Sachs maintains a long-term bullish target of...

Thursday, South Korean stock markets fell sharply.

At the time of writing, the KOSPI index dropped over 4%, currently at 6322.55 points. Among individual stocks, SK Hynix fell over 8% and Samsung Electronics dropped over 5%.

In the Hong Kong market, the Direxion Daily CSI 300 China A Share Bull 2X Shares ETF linked to Hynix fell over 15%, and the 2X leveraged ETF on Samsung dropped over 11%.

Guidance Shock from U.S. Memory Giants

The trigger for this round of selling points directly to the "guidance shock" from the U.S. memory chip sector overnight.

After the U.S. market closed on Wednesday Eastern Time, SanDisk and Western Digital both released their latest financial reports.

The reports showed that these two memory giants delivered unexpectedly strong results for the previous quarter, but their current-quarter guidance both failed to meet Wall Street's higher growth expectations.

Specifically, SanDisk expects next quarter revenue to be between $10.3 billion and $10.8 billion, below analysts' expectation of $11.16 billion. Western Digital expects next quarter revenue between $4.0 billion and $4.2 billion, slightly above the analyst consensus of $4.04 billion.

The "better-than-expected past" was not enough to fully offset the "slightly-below-expectations future."

Following the earnings release, both memory giants were heavily sold off, with SanDisk falling over 8% and Western Digital dropping over 11%.

The pessimistic guidance from the memory giants quickly transmitted through the supply chain to Asian markets.

On Thursday, after the South Korean stock market opened, SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics faced heavy selling pressure.

Data shows that up to the previous trading session, foreign investors had accumulated a net purchase of 1.4513 trillion won in Korean stocks, but on the 6th, they net sold over 500 billion won in the market.

Analysts pointed out that Asian markets ultimately still need to watch the U.S. market's movements and lack pricing power.

Mirae Asset Securities researcher Han Ji-young stated that despite improvements in geopolitics and the macro environment, influenced by the weakening Philadelphia Semiconductor Index and profit-taking after the recent rapid short-term stock price gains, the market is likely to enter a phase of consolidation and sector rotation.

"The exceptionally amplified volatility seen during the July crash has passed its peak."

Latest Response from the Blue House

It is noteworthy that since surging to an all-time high on June 19, the South Korean stock market has been fluctuating downwards. Over the past month, the KOSPI index has accumulated a loss of 21.17%.

Facing the sharply volatile market, the South Korean government is urgently "rescuing the market."

Earlier, Kim Yong-beom, the head of the Office for Government Policy Coordination under the President's Office, faced criminal charges for "rushing the introduction of leveraged ETFs."

In response, Seong Gi-hong, Senior Presidential Secretary for Public Relations and Communication, stated in the latest response that the current priority is to closely monitor market conditions and formulate corresponding countermeasures.

"All relevant officials in the presidential office are carefully examining each situation and very prudently studying how to formulate related measures."

Last Friday, South Korea's financial regulator raised the minimum cash margin requirement for investing in single-stock leveraged ETFs.

After the regulator introduced these restrictive measures, trading volume in South Korean single-stock leveraged ETFs plummeted.

Latest data released by the Korea Exchange showed that the average daily trading volume of 16 single-stock leveraged ETFs fell to 919.8 billion won on Wednesday, dropping below 1 trillion won for the first time since their listing on May 27.

Morgan Stanley noted that the previous intense leverage unwinding is nearing its end, and KOSPI valuations have fallen to historically low levels, providing investors with a more attractive entry point.

However, China Securities (CITIC Securities) holds a different view on this matter.

The institution believes that while leverage among South Korean retail investors has been rapidly reduced, margin balances are still shrinking at the fastest pace this year, and the liquidation rate remains far above normal levels. It expects subsequent market volatility to remain relatively high.

Looking ahead, analysts stated that after a prolonged bull market, the global memory semiconductor sector has entered a phase of high sensitivity and high volatility, and short-term sentiment shocks need time to digest.

From a medium to long-term perspective, Goldman Sachs firmly maintains its target of 12,000 points for the KOSPI index, expecting the market still has about 80% to 90% upside potential.

The bank believes that current market pricing does not reflect the potential severe shortage of memory chips, which could persist until 2030. As AI computing demand accelerates, the semiconductor industry, which accounts for over 50% of the KOSPI's weight, will become a global profit engine.

J.P. Morgan similarly maintains its optimistic outlook on SK Hynix and the memory chip industry, viewing this pullback as an opportunity to increase positions.

Jensen Huang's Daughter: From Chef to an $8 Million Annual Salary

Madison Huang, daughter of NVIDIA founder Jensen Huang, recently made a rare public appearance in Beijing during the 2026 World Robot Conference. As the Senior Director of Product and Technology Marketing for NVIDIA's Physical AI Platform, with an annual salary of approximately $1.2 million, her visit focused on evaluating leading Chinese robotics companies like UBTech, Unitree, and others. This highlights NVIDIA's strategic interest in the burgeoning Chinese robotics ecosystem, a key battleground for the development of Physical AI—technology that enables machines to understand and interact with the physical world. Huang's career path is unconventional. Initially pursuing her passion, she studied culinary arts, worked as a chef, and later held a marketing role at LVMH. She joined NVIDIA as an intern in 2020 after completing an MBA, quickly rising through the ranks. Her brother, Spencer Huang, followed a similar path, closing a cocktail bar he co-founded to also join NVIDIA, where he now works on robotics software. Jensen Huang has publicly addressed nepotism concerns, humorously noting that some "second-generation" employees outperform their parents. The conference itself underscored China's vibrant robotics sector, marked by Unitree's recent blockbuster IPO and a pipeline of companies preparing to go public. While hardware development and manufacturing are advancing rapidly, industry leaders like Wang Xingxing of Unitree point to the next critical challenge: developing the "brain" or AI that allows robots to perform diverse, unseen tasks based on simple instructions. With massive manufacturing scale and diverse real-world testing scenarios, China is positioned as a central player in the global race to define the future of robotics.

He Gave Wang Xingxing the First 2 Million, Now Serves as Chairman for the Next 'Unitree'

On August 19, 2024, Unitree Robotics, China's "first humanoid robotics stock," went public. Its founder, Wang Xingxing, started a decade ago with his self-developed XDog. In 2016, at a critical funding juncture, he received his first angel investment of 2 million RMB from Yin Fangming. This bet has since yielded a return of over 140 times. Yin Fangming is more than just a key investor. He was a co-founder of the AI robotics company ROOBO, whose own venture ultimately struggled. This firsthand experience with the hardware challenges in robotics gave him unique insight when backing Unitree, a company renowned for its hardware R&D and cost control. While his own company faltered, Yin continued investing shrewdly. He partially cashed out some Unitree shares early, reinvesting the proceeds into sectors like energy (e.g., solid-state battery firm TaiLan) and commercial aerospace (e.g., small launch vehicle developer XianDeng Aerospace). However, his most significant move after Unitree is his deep involvement with Galaxy General, a leading embodied AI unicorn. In July 2024, Yin stepped from behind the scenes to officially become its Chairman, indicating a role far beyond a typical investor. This comes as Galaxy General is viewed as preparing for future capital moves. Yin's career has consistently been ahead of the curve—from mobile internet to AI and robotics. Known for his foresight and low profile, he declined an interview for this story, offering only a statement encouraging support for visionary entrepreneurs like Wang Xingxing.

Coldcard Theft Reflection: Source Code Visibility Does Not Equal Security

The article examines the open-source vs. closed-source debate in crypto, prompted by a theft of over $100M in Bitcoin from Coldcard hardware wallets. It clarifies key terminology: true "Free and Open Source Software" (FOSS) grants four essential freedoms (use, study, share, modify), while "source available" code, like Coldcard's firmware, may have usage restrictions. The piece argues that visible source code alone does not guarantee security; actual safety depends on the economic incentives for thorough, ongoing review by skilled individuals. Using Bitcoin Core as a model, the article describes a successful, transparent open-source development culture built on public review and consensus. It contrasts this with the Coldcard case, where a critical bug in a lightly-reviewed, source-available library went undetected for years, highlighting a "tragedy of the commons" scenario where assumed but absent scrutiny creates vulnerability. The economics of licensing are crucial: restrictive licenses can limit the pool of motivated commercial reviewers. Finally, the article explores AI's impact. It cites the Bitcoin Red Team's use of AI to rapidly audit codebases and find vulnerabilities at scale, demonstrating a powerful new tool for security. However, AI also floods projects with low-quality code, straining maintainers. The piece concludes that in high-stakes crypto, only well-audited projects—whether open or closed-source—can withstand evolving threats, with AI both challenging and aiding security practices.
