Bitcoin's Largest Buyer, Now a Seller. Ethereum Could Be Next

Abstract

Ethereum (ETH) may soon lose its largest and most consistent corporate buyer, as Bitmine Immersion Technologies (NASDAQ: BMNR) nears its goal of controlling 5% of the ETH supply, having already reached 4.8%. Bitmine has drastically slowed its accumulation, purchasing only 7,391 ETH ($14.2 million) last week, its smallest weekly buy of 2026, compared to over 100,000 ETH per week earlier in the year. Similarly, Michael Saylor's MicroStrategy (NASDAQ: MSTR), Bitcoin's largest corporate holder, has paused its Bitcoin purchases since June to focus on buying back its STRC preferred shares until they reach $100. Bitmine, led by Tom Lee, indicated it would limit purchases to avoid hitting the 5% target too quickly and is now prioritizing buybacks of its own BMNR stock. Arkham Intelligence outlined three scenarios: Bitmine could exceed 5% and continue buying, slow purchases further, or stop entirely upon reaching the target. A full stop could dampen short-term bullish sentiment for ETH. A key difference is that unlike MicroStrategy, Bitmine stakes over 5 million ETH through its MAVAN validators, generating an estimated $257 million in annual staking rewards. This means its ETH holdings can continue growing from network rewards even without new purchases.

Ethereum could soon follow Bitcoin's lead and lose its largest and most consistent buyer, as Bitmine Immersion Technologies (NASDAQ: BMNR) approaches its goal of controlling 5% of all circulating $ETH, having reached 4.8% according to its latest report.

Bitmine has already begun slowing its accumulation pace, extending its 58-week buying streak by only 7,391 $ETH (approx. $14.2 million) last week. Notably, this was the smallest weekly purchase in 2026, compared to over 100,000 $ETH per week earlier in the year.

Meanwhile, Michael Saylor's Strategy company (NASDAQ: MSTR) has completely halted Bitcoin purchases since June, at least until it reaches its stated goal of bringing the value of its STRC preferred shares to $100.

Now the question is whether Ethereum can cope with a future where weeks turn into months, and during that time, Tom Lee's Bitmine won't buy any $ETH at all.

Why Is Bitmine Buying Less Ethereum?

Tom Lee, co-founder of Fundstrat, who oversees the treasury asset management strategy, hinted back in May at the Consensus conference in Miami that the company would limit its Ethereum volumes. At the same time, Lee added that the company did not want purchases to reach the 5% target too quickly.

As of June, weekly $ETH purchases by Bitmine decreased by more than 75%.

The Bitmine company is instead buying back its own BMNR shares. Since July, the firm has repurchased 19.1 million shares. Just last week, it bought 3 million shares for between $50 and $58 million.

Strategy Company Also Paused Bitcoin Buying to Repurchase Shares

Reportedly, the largest buyers of Bitcoin and Ethereum are currently prioritizing repurchasing their own shares.

As Cryptopolitan reported, the Strategy company used all $108.6 million received from selling Bitcoin last week to repurchase its STRC preferred shares. A week earlier, it sold 1,638 BTC for approximately $104.7 million.

However, their reasoning diverges. Michael Saylor's company is defending its balance sheet, while Bitmine is taking a relatively more sustainable position.

What Will Happen to Ether If Bitmine Stops Buying $ETH?

Arkham Intelligence, whose data indicates that Bitmine is 96% of the way to its 5% target, outlined three possible scenarios. The firm could exceed the 5% mark and continue buying, as Lee is a staunch optimist viewing current prices as a discount. It could reduce purchase volumes, which blockchain data suggests is already happening. Or, it could completely stop buying after reaching the target.

The last scenario is the one Ether holders should watch. If the largest corporate buyer of Ether on the market exits the demand side, Arkham noted, it could negatively impact short-term bullish sentiment. At the time of this Cryptopolitan report's publication, Ether was trading around $1,903, significantly below the levels at which most of the treasury sector acquired it.

One factor mitigates the comparison. Unlike Strategy, Bitmine stakes the majority of its $ETH, over 5 million tokens, through its MAVAN validator network, generating a projected annual staking revenue of about $257 million at a 2.63% yield.

Even without new purchases, such exposure means the Bitmine stack can continue growing solely from network rewards. A buyer who stops buying is not the same as a seller.

Related Questions

QWhat is the primary reason why Bitmine (BMNR) is slowing its purchases of Ethereum?

ABitmine is slowing its purchases of Ethereum because it is approaching its stated goal of controlling 5% of all ETH in circulation. As of the report, it has reached 4.8%. Tom Lee, a co-founder, indicated earlier that the company wants to avoid reaching this 5% target too quickly.

QWhat is another key financial activity that both Bitmine and Michael Saylor's Strategy (MSTR) are prioritizing over buying cryptocurrency?

ABoth Bitmine and Michael Saylor's Strategy are prioritizing buying back their own company shares over purchasing Bitcoin or Ethereum. Bitmine bought back 3 million BMNR shares last week, and Strategy used proceeds from Bitcoin sales to repurchase its preferred STRC shares.

QWhat are the three potential scenarios Arkham Intelligence outlined for Bitmine's future Ethereum buying strategy?

AArkham Intelligence outlined three scenarios: 1) Bitmine could exceed the 5% target and continue buying, as Tom Lee is a long-term optimist. 2) It could reduce buying volumes, which blockchain data suggests is already happening. 3) It could stop buying entirely after reaching the 5% target.

QAccording to the article, how could the cessation of purchases by Bitmine affect the Ethereum market in the short term?

AIf Bitmine, as the largest corporate buyer of Ether, stops purchasing, it could negatively impact short-term bullish sentiment in the market, as a major source of demand would exit.

QWhat key factor differentiates Bitmine's position from Strategy's, even if both stop buying cryptocurrency?

AA key differentiating factor is that Bitmine stakes over 5 million of its ETH tokens through its MAVAN validator network, generating an estimated $257 million in annual staking rewards. This means its ETH stack can continue growing from network rewards alone, so a buyer stopping purchases is not the same as a seller.

El Salvador’s Bitcoin experiment turns 5: ‘It was for us, not them’

Five years after becoming the first country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender, El Salvador's national experiment is widely viewed as a failure based on its original stated goals of banking the unbanked, slashing remittance costs, and attracting major foreign investment. Research indicates mass adoption by citizens never occurred; Bitcoin use remained concentrated among young, urban, educated, and already banked males. The government's Chivo wallet failed to address core barriers to financial inclusion, and Bitcoin accounted for barely 1% of remittances by 2024, offering little advantage as most funds arrive in US dollars. Following a 2024 IMF financing deal, El Salvador scaled back its involvement, making Bitcoin acceptance voluntary and limiting state use. However, the experiment undeniably changed the global conversation, turning nation-state Bitcoin adoption from theory into reality and positioning El Salvador at the center of the Bitcoin movement. It provided a proof of concept and a global platform, attracting prominent Bitcoin advocates. Success stories exist in localized economies like Bitcoin Beach, but analysts note the project's symbolic benefits were largely "for" the international Bitcoin community rather than "for" the economic transformation of most Salvadorans. The assessment is further complicated by President Nayib Bukele's popular, yet authoritarian, governance style, which delivered drastically improved security but raised concerns about centralized power and civil liberties. Ultimately, Bitcoin gave Bukele a global stage, and Bukele gave Bitcoin its first national adoption test.
