On August 18th, UBS analysts visited Murata Manufacturing's Fukui Takefu Factory. This marks the first time this factory has been open to the public in approximately 20 years.
Murata is the global leader in MLCCs (Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitors) with a market share of around 35%. The Takefu Factory is the mother factory for advanced MLCCs, primarily supplying AI servers and high-end smartphones.
The AI computing race is pushing every link in the supply chain to its limits. This visit allowed UBS to verify several key assessments: the technical barriers remain formidable, there is roughly 20% potential for production increase from existing equipment, and physical capacity expansion is approaching its limits.
Flexible Production of 50,000 Product Varieties Constitutes an Irreplicable Competitive Barrier
Murata employs a segmented production process system, with workshops laid out according to process stages. This model requires more manpower, but its advantages are clear: it flexibly meets the production demands of 50,000 product varieties, which is more than 5 times the number offered by competitors; it maximizes equipment utilization across all process stages while preventing defective products from moving to the next stage.
UBS analysts point out that Murata's competitive advantage in high-end fields like AI servers stems from three aspects: control over ceramic material uniformity, proprietary technology to maximize capacitance, and in-house developed production equipment for space optimization. These three form a closed loop, with material formulas not disclosed, equipment self-developed and not externally purchased, and process parameters not leaked. UBS describes this technical barrier as "black-boxing."
Among the 11 production buildings at the Takefu Factory, UBS visited the largest one, Building E. This building mainly produces the 1005 size product, which is precisely the specification seeing the clearest demand growth from AI servers.
Optimizing Existing Assets to Alleviate Capacity Expansion Bottlenecks
The most striking number from the visit came from an on-site explanation by Murata's management. Improvements in yield rate, optimization of feedback between processes, and automation of inspection processes could unleash approximately 20% additional production potential.
The significance of this number must be understood in the context of the real constraints on capacity expansion. Murata management revealed that the possibility of constructing new buildings or adding equipment at the Takefu Factory is diminishing, and labor shortages are also a constraint. Future physical capacity expansion will primarily rely on three sources: the new Izumo Murata Manufacturing building scheduled for completion in April 2026, the new factory on land already acquired in Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture, and capacity freed up by transferring general-purpose products to factories in Thailand.
Lead times for parts required for in-house developed equipment are lengthening. UBS notes Murata has previously stated that capacity expansion from new equipment additions is unlikely to significantly exceed the previous annual pace of around 10%. Achieving a 20% output increase from existing equipment is a lower-cost, more certain path. This visit confirmed the supply rigidity of Murata's advanced capacity. With new capacity construction constrained and equipment lead times extended, the market is re-evaluating the value of optimizing existing assets.
Product Portfolio Upgrading is Driving Margin Expansion
UBS's target price of 13,200 yen is based on a projected P/E ratio of 30x for FY2029. This multiple corresponds to the significant expansion expected in Murata's operating profit margin. UBS's model shows the operating margin rising from 15.4% in FY2026 to 37.6% in FY2029.
The core logic driving margin expansion comes from product portfolio upgrading. The demand from AI servers and high-end smartphones for high-capacitance, small-size MLCCs continues to grow. The unit price and profit margin for these products are far higher than those for general-purpose products. Murata's strategy of transferring general-purpose products to overseas factories like those in Thailand, while focusing domestic Japanese factories like Takefu on advanced products, will further enhance overall profitability.
UBS lists key risks including demand slowdown due to a U.S. economic downturn, diffusion of high-capacitance ceramic capacitor technology to Asia, and migration of high-frequency circuits into integrated circuits (ICs). UBS's assessment of the industry structure is moderately positive: tending to improve over the next 6 months, with the possibility of an earnings guidance revision around October 31st.
Murata's value stems from improving efficiency per unit of output. As AI chips grow larger and packaging substrates grow tighter, the barriers for the passive components leader are forming a closed loop across three areas simultaneously: materials, equipment, and processes. In an era of constrained physical expansion, this closed-loop capability is more valuable than adding new production lines. Whether UBS's projected 76% upside potential materializes depends on whether the MLCC product portfolio upgrade progresses as anticipated.
