In August 2026, at least 13 Bitcoin addresses that had been inactive for periods ranging from 12 to over 15 years made transfers against the backdrop of a significant increase in the value of the leading cryptocurrency. According to Galaxy Research, a total of about 818 $BTC were moved from such wallets, with a market value exceeding $60 million at the time of the transactions.
Bitcoins Lay in Wallets for Over a Decade
The largest transfer involved moving 212 $BTC on August 18 from an address that had not been used for about 14 years. At the time of the move, the coins were valued at approximately $13.66 million, while their average cost basis was around $12 per coin.
On August 22, activity from several old addresses resulted in the movement of another 282.31 $BTC. Among these were 150 $BTC that had been stored for 11.7 years, and 132.31 $BTC received as far back as 2011.
On August 29, another address, which had not conducted any operations for over 15 years, moved 10 $BTC. At the time of the transaction, this amount was about $777,000, while the initial cost of the coins was estimated at roughly $15 per coin for the first cryptocurrency.
Other transfers occurred between August 1 and 18 and involved amounts from 8.54 to 49.97 $BTC from individual addresses. The storage period for these coins ranged from 12 to 15 years, and the recorded realized profit on individual wallets reached millions of dollars.
According to Galaxy Research estimates, the owner of 40 $BTC, which were moved on August 26 after 14 years and two months of inactivity, realized a profit of about $3.16 million. The coins were then transferred to an address associated with Boerse Stuttgart Digital.
Recall that in March, a Bitcoin whale moved 2,100 $BTC (over $147 million at the time of the transaction) after approximately 13 years and seven months of inactivity.
