French Tax Agency Admits Data Leak: Hacker Stole 678,000 Records

A significant data breach has occurred at France's General Directorate of Public Finances (DGFiP), with a hacker known as "Zerobytes" stealing 678,438 taxpayer records. The attacker claims to have infiltrated internal servers via a VPN using an internal search tool. Although access was cut off, preventing a full data download, the stolen file is reportedly being sold for thousands of euros. The DGFiP confirmed the June 12th attack, stating it immediately disabled all compromised accounts but admitted its access controls failed to detect the sophisticated data theft. The agency assured that website login credentials remain secure and announced new security measures. It will directly contact affected individuals next week to inform them of the specific data likely viewed or extracted and any necessary precautions. The breach has heightened fears among French cryptocurrency holders of potential "key attacks," as France has seen a rise in crypto-related crimes. Following the incident, calls have emerged for a moratorium on state data collection until security improves. By April, French authorities had charged 88 individuals in 12 crypto-related kidnapping cases, with 41 attacks recorded.
