XRP funding hits extreme lows as bears crowd in: Is a bear trap brewing?

Every time price pushes into a resistance zone, you’ve basically got setup risk for a trap.

Right now, $XRP’s structure is showing that in real time. On the daily, it’s bouncing hard off the $1.15 base and grinding up as market sentiment flips back risk-on after the U.S.-Iran peace deal.

But calling this a clean breakout is probably early.

In the early June move, $XRP already tried pushing through $1.25 and got rejected, with sellers stepping in and taking control.

That’s usually where things get tricky.

Technically, traders start fading strength into resistance, expecting the same rejection again. It builds overhead supply, and if longs get too aggressive, it can turn into a bull trap.

We already saw a version of that with a 6% pullback after the price tapped $1.25 and got smacked down.

Naturally, the question becomes: Is Ripple [$XRP] setting up a similar structure?

One thing standing out is Funding Rates. $XRP’s OI-Weighted Funding Rate is basically sitting near rock bottom.

For context, the OI-Weighted Funding Rate tracks whether traders are mostly long or short, but gives more weight to where the big leveraged positions are.

When funding is very positive, it usually means too many traders are long and the market is overheated.

Right now it’s the opposite; funding is deeply negative, meaning most traders are short. Looking at $XRP’s last rejection from resistance, this kind of positioning doesn’t look random.

Instead, it actually lines up with a more intentional setup, making the bull trap thesis far from far-fetched.

A new academic study published on SSRN explores whether cryptocurrencies are still independent alternative assets or have they become increasingly integrated with traditional financial markets. The research looks at how big cryptos, gold, oil, stocks, and the dollar interact, especially in terms of how market shocks and volatility move from one asset group to another.

Since 2024, more institutions have entered crypto than ever via ETFs, corporate treasury strategies, tokenization projects, and traditional banks. As a result, many now think cryptocurrencies are no longer operating in isolation. SSRN researchers say that different asset classes become more linked during market turmoil, so big economic events can now move crypto just like they move stocks, oil, gold, and currencies.

$XRP briefly broke above the long-standing $1.20 ceiling and touched near $1.25 before profit-taking cut the rally and shifted attention to whether the breakout can hold.

Strong volume and a confirmed breakout from early-June consolidation improved $XRP’s short-term technical picture, but a sustained recovery likely requires a move through the $1.30 area.

Traders are watching $1.20 as key support, $1.25 as immediate resistance, and $1.30–$1.32 as the next upside target, with a drop back below $1.20 risking a retreat toward $1.14–$1.15.

$XRP finally broke through the $1.20 level that had capped rallies for weeks, but buyers couldn't keep control of the move.

After climbing as much as 10% and briefly trading near $1.25, the token ran into profit-taking that pushed it off session highs, putting the focus back on whether the breakout can hold rather than how far it can extend.

• $XRP ETFs recorded a second straight week of inflows, attracting $10.68 million and lifting cumulative inflows to roughly $1.44 billion.

• South Korea's Upbit exchange accounted for 31% of $XRP wallet-flow activity by June 14, up from 13% a week earlier, highlighting strong regional demand.

• Ripple continued expanding its payments infrastructure through integrations including OpenPayd and RLUSD-related settlement activity.

• $XRP climbed from roughly $1.14 to a session high near $1.25 before pulling back.

• The breakout was driven by a volume surge that reached more than 180 million $XRP, easily clearing resistance around $1.20.

• Selling emerged near $1.25, trimming gains and leaving traders focused on whether former resistance can now hold as support.

• The move confirmed a breakout from the early-June consolidation range.

• Volume was strong enough to validate the breakout, distinguishing it from several failed rallies seen earlier this month.
