US crypto market structure talks resume as Senate markup and SEC–CFTC event converge
US lawmakers and regulators will resume crypto market structure talks on Thursday, January 29, after weather-related delays. The Senate Agriculture Committee will hold a markup hearing at 10:30 a.m. ET to review and amend the Digital Commodities Intermediary Act, which aims to establish a CFTC-led framework for digital commodity markets. Later that day, at 2:00 p.m. ET, the SEC and CFTC will hold a harmonization event focused on inter-agency coordination.
Proposed amendments could significantly expand the bill’s scope, including ethics rules barring senior officials from holding crypto, consumer protection measures, national security restrictions targeting foreign adversaries, and provisions affecting payment networks. The markup will determine whether the bill remains focused on market structure or broadens into other policy areas.
