Polish authorities are reconsidering the need for clear regulations to protect citizens from cryptocurrency fraud.
On Friday, during a Council of Ministers meeting discussing the 2027 budget draft, Tusk commented on the current situation with the Zondacrypto exchange, which has turned into one of the country's largest cryptocurrency-related corruption cases.
Tusk expressed regret that the budget preparation process was overshadowed by Zondacrypto's bankruptcy and the recent detention of Polish Olympic Committee President Radosław Piesiewicz as part of the corruption investigation.
"This is not some ordinary bribe, not a case involving one politician. It seems to be a well-organized system featuring names known from other cases," stated Tusk, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
Tusk declared that following this, he would appeal to the Speaker of the Sejm to organize a re-vote on the Cryptocurrency Market Act, which President Karol Nawrocki vetoed for the third time on June 11.
"Perhaps the moment has come when no one will have the courage to say 'there is no problem' or that we still have plenty of time. At this stage, I can no longer imagine President Nawrocki, Chairman Kaczyński, and former Prime Minister Morawiecki treating this issue with such incredible lightness," stated Tusk.
Tusk directly implicated President Nawrocki in the Zondacrypto bankruptcy scandal, which reportedly caused affected clients to lose up to $94 million.
On social media, he emphasized that this was the reason for vetoing the law, accusing the ruling party of receiving "money for watches worth 40,000 euros, for media, election campaigns, and the funds of right-wing politicians."
Przemysław Kral, former head of Zondacrypto, criticized the law, calling it a "serious step backward" and assuring that if passed, the national cryptocurrency industry would "suffer."
As a result of the veto, Poland finds itself in a sort of limbo, unable to apply the provisions of the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). Consequently, national exchanges still cannot register in Poland.
