La guerra entre EE. UU. e Irán se reaviva: los hedge funds aumentan agresivamente las posiciones en crudo al ritmo más rápido en una década
Tensions between the US and Iran are reshaping global oil markets. Hedge funds are placing the biggest bets in a decade on rising Brent crude prices, following renewed US strikes on Iran and Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz. This has severely reduced traffic through the vital chokepoint.
In the week to July 14, money managers increased their net-long positions on Brent by 75,996 lots to 357,154, the largest weekly surge since December 2016, reversing a seven-month low. Oil prices jumped to a one-month high, erasing some of the previous quarter's 30% drop. This marks a sharp reversal from recent fears of oversupply, with investors now rushing to cover short positions.
The conflict is also tightening global fuel supplies. Reduced Strait of Hormuz traffic, combined with attacks on Russian refineries by Ukraine (which led Moscow to ban diesel exports), has pushed refining margins to record highs. Funds also aggressively increased net-long positions on heating oil and diesel. These dual supply shocks are driving the surge in fuel prices and attracting heavy speculative buying.
