Attention: Hundreds of Millions of New Tokens to Enter Circulation as an Altcoin!
The Optimism Foundation has released its budget forecast for the fifth year of operations (May 2026 - April 2027), projecting the release of approximately 343 million new OP tokens into circulation. The bulk of these, 200 million OP, will come from the Ecosystem Fund, with an additional 47.6 million OP unlocked for early contributors and 15.3 million OP for investors. Following this distribution, the circulating supply of OP is estimated to reach around 2.5 billion tokens, representing about 58.3% of the total 4.29 billion OP supply. The foundation emphasized that this token release adheres to the project's original distribution plan and does not constitute a new allocation request.
Separately, operational expenses for Optimism Collective decreased in its fourth year (May 2025 - April 2026). New commitments totaled roughly 150 million OP, a reduction of about one-third from the previous year's 229.92 million OP. This decline is attributed to the conclusion of the RetroPGF funding program, no user airdrops during the period, and reduced budgets and grant numbers from the Grants Council. Consequently, token inflows from the Governance Fund dropped 53%, and RetroPGF distributions fell 30%. No airdrop distributions occurred in the fourth year, compared to 10.4 million OP distributed the year prior.
