On August 4th, Ripple President Monica Long outlined the company's overarching strategy following Ripple's announcement of strategic investments in Zilo and Licuido to expand capital markets infrastructure connected to the $XRP Ledger. She detailed the rapid transition from bank pilot projects to full-scale operations and positioned Ripple's digital asset suite as covering the full lifecycle of tokenized assets.
"In the past year, we've witnessed a real turning point—from bank pilots to full-scale operations, from issuing tokenized assets like money market funds and liquidity funds to their utilization! Institutional capital markets are moving in one direction—on-chain 24/7," Long stated on X, adding:
"At Ripple, our goal remains to provide a full suite of digital asset infrastructure, enabling institutional players to leverage the full benefits of the complete lifecycle of a tokenized asset on the $XRP Ledger."
These investments in ZILO and Licuido complement Ripple's broader capital markets strategy with infrastructure for fund tokenization and institutional liquidity provision, supporting fund issuance, trading, and settlement on the $XRP Ledger.
Ripple's Mint platform further enhances this strategy. Launched on July 23rd, it provides financial institutions with a unified interface to access, issue, redeem, and manage Ripple USD ($RLUSD), as well as to issue and transfer the stablecoin between fiat and blockchain settlement systems.
Institutional issuers can also utilize Ripple's tokenization platform to create security tokens, stablecoins, fund shares, bonds, commodities, and other real-world asset (RWA) tokens. Its infrastructure combines issuance, redemption, regulatory compliance checks, transfer restrictions, audit trails, freeze/thaw controls, clawback capabilities, and multi-chain distribution.
Tokenized Funds Enter Trading, Lending, and Yield Markets
The partnership among DBS, Franklin Templeton, and Ripple demonstrates how tokenized assets can enable continuous portfolio management post-issuance. This agreement allows eligible DBS clients to swap $RLUSD for Franklin Templeton's tokenized money market fund tokens within minutes while maintaining access to yield.
DBS also plans to explore accepting these tokenized fund shares as collateral under bank repo agreements or via third-party lending platforms. Such a structure would enable institutional investors to switch between a stable settlement asset and a yield-bearing instrument intraday.
Real-world asset tokens can represent bonds, funds, commodities, and real estate on blockchain networks, enabling faster transfers and round-the-clock settlement for these assets.
Lending Infrastructure Could Extend XRPL Stack
A proposed XRPL lending protocol would add standardized institutional lending to the network's tokenization infrastructure. This architecture allows underwriting and compliance decisions to remain off-chain, while managing servicing, repayment, interest accrual, and defaults on-chain for Treasury securities, stablecoins, commodities, money market funds, and private loans.
A separate XRPL infrastructure initiative connects the liquidity of $XRP and $RLUSD to regulated yield-bearing tokenized U.S. Treasury products. As part of a partnership between Doppler Finance and Openeden, plans are in place to integrate Openeden's TBILL token and the yield-bearing stablecoin USDO into a protocol natively supported on XRPL, utilizing audited reserves, regulated custody, and compliance control mechanisms.
The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has identified tokenization as a potential source of faster, programmable payments and more efficient financial intermediation. Its 2026 assessment also called for robust settlement instruments, coordinated oversight, and stronger safeguards, while warning that current stablecoin structures pose risks to financial integrity and the monetary system.
Ripple's next phase of expansion hinges on validators' decisions regarding the proposed lending standards, which will determine whether XRPL's tokenized assets can support institutional lending at the protocol level.
