Ethereum Developers to Shortlist 66 Proposals for Hegotá Upgrade

Abstract

Ethereum developers are currently reviewing 66 proposals to finalize the feature set for the network's next major upgrade, codenamed "Hegotá," slated for next year. The selection process aims to streamline the list, with several proposals focusing on enhancing the protocol's privacy capabilities. The sole Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) currently planned for inclusion is FOCIL (Fork-choice enforced inclusion lists), designed to improve censorship resistance by allowing a validator committee to force pending transactions into blocks. Other key contenders for Hegotá are Frame Transactions (EIP-8141), Keyed Nonces (EIP-8250), and Recent Roots for Frame Transactions (EIP-8272). These initiatives are seen as critical for enabling native privacy, allowing privacy-preserving applications to operate without intermediaries. While Hegotá's planning progresses, developers are preparing to release the "Glamsterdam" upgrade later this year, a significant update aimed at improving scalability, security, and usability. The upcoming developer meetings will be crucial in determining Ethereum's development path for 2027. Proposals not selected for Hegotá may be reconsidered for future network upgrades.

Ethereum developers are currently reviewing 66 proposals to narrow down the list for the composition of the network's next major upgrade — Hegotá. Several initiatives expand the protocol's privacy capabilities.

FOCIL is the only Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) slated for inclusion in the upgrade. Frame transactions (EIP-8141), Nonce with Keys (EIP-8250), and recent roots for frame transactions (EIP-8272) should also be included to "pave the way for native privacy, enabling privacy-preserving applications to operate without intermediaries," according to a Sunday post on X.

FOCIL stands for Fork-choice enforced inclusion lists. The proposal would allow a committee of validators to forcibly include pending transactions in blocks, increasing the network's resistance to censorship, while other initiatives could provide protocol primitives for privacy-preserving applications.

Core developers plan to release Hegotá next year. Upcoming Ethereum developer meetings will largely determine the network's development in 2027. Proposals not selected for Hegotá may be reconsidered for a later upgrade.

The next Ethereum developer meeting is scheduled for Monday at 02:00 UTC.

Meanwhile, Ethereum developers will first release Glamsterdam — one of the most significant upgrades this year.
