Ethereum Surges 31% in a Week, But Altcoin Season Indicators Still Suggest Otherwise

Abstract

Ethereum has surged 31% over the past week, trading around $2,495. However, key altcoin season trackers from CoinMarketCap and BlockchainCenter suggest a full altcoin season has not begun, as their metrics require 75% of top cryptocurrencies to outperform Bitcoin over 90 days. While several altcoins like XRP and Zcash posted even larger weekly gains, Bitcoin still dominates over 59% of the total market cap. Analysts note current conditions are marked by selective rallies in specific liquid assets rather than broad market-wide growth. BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes expressed bullishness on Ethereum's potential, predicting it could outperform other large-cap assets and reach above $5,000. However, caution is advised, as a high percentage of altcoins recently traded below their long-term moving averages, indicating underlying weakness.

Over the past seven days, Ethereum has demonstrated improved performance: its value increased by nearly 31%, and it is currently trading at approximately $2,495.

However, despite this seven-day surge, the two most popular trackers monitoring the altcoin season have yet to declare it an altcoin season. Traders, in turn, can only compare the rapid rise of $ETH with indicators that remain in a neutral position.

The Rally is Real, But Its Scale is Limited

$ETH is trading around $2,494.68, having gained 2.59% for the day and 31.01% for the week. Bitcoin, priced at around $78,411, showed a weekly increase of 23.25%.

$XRP and Zcash ($ZEC) are just some of the cryptocurrencies that have outperformed $ETH over the past seven days. $XRP rose approximately 49%, while $ZEC surged about 64% over the same period.

However, Bitcoin still leads the market in total market capitalization, accounting for over 59% of the market. $ETH holds about 11.4% share. Thus, there is no clear capital outflow from BTC. Overall, market sentiment is tense, with CoinMarketCap's Fear and Greed Index scoring 80 out of 100.

What Exactly Do These Indexes Measure

Two indexes are the defi (most commonly used by traders) term for tracking the long-elusive altcoin season. The altcoin season is defined based on certain criteria by companies CoinMarketCap and BlockchainCenter. Both companies have indexes that help them determine whether the season has begun or not.

According to CoinMarketCap, an altcoin season occurs only when at least 75% of the top 100 cryptocurrencies outperform Bitcoin over 90 days. If this figure is 25% or less, the site calls that period a Bitcoin season.

BlockchainCenter applies a similar rule to the top 50 most popular cryptocurrencies. So, if at least 75% of the top 50 cryptocurrencies perform better than Bitcoin over 90 days, then the altcoin season begins. At the time of checking, this figure was 43, which is below the threshold for the start of an altcoin season.

According to BlockchainCenter's own calculations, it has been over 332 days since the last altcoin season. Both metrics exclude stablecoins, such as Tether, and asset-backed wrappers, such as WBTC and stETH.

Glassnode wrote on X that the altcoin market "has entered a state of optimism," reporting that 85% of altcoins have pushed funding rates above average, which the company believes is the highest reading on this metric since Bitcoin hit its all-time highs. "During an altcoin season, such conditions can persist for many weeks," added Glassnode.

Hayes Bets on Ethereum's Leadership

In an interview with Laura Shin, BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes stated that Ethereum is now his second-largest asset after Bitcoin, noting that $ETH's failure to reclaim its 2021 high leaves it room to catch up and that it carries much less risk of going to zero than smaller tokens. He said that a decisive breakout above $3,000 could push the price above $5,000.

In an interview with the Altcoin Daily podcast, Hayes went even further, predicting that $ETH will outperform all other large-cap assets in this liquidity-driven recovery and could help reduce Bitcoin dominance to near 40%.

Why Caution is Necessary

Recent history explains this hesitation. Cryptopolitan reported that altcoin selling reached record highs, with the seasonal index at 49, and on June 30, more than 84% of altcoins traded below their 200-day moving average, marking the longest such period since the 2022 bear market.

CryptoQuant analyst Darkfrost noted that altcoins have remained tightly correlated with Bitcoin, so a strong BTC no longer automatically pulls the entire rest of the market with it. This pattern has favored short, narrow "mini" rallies in a few liquid assets, rather than broad, comprehensive rises that the indexes are designed to identify.

Related Questions

QWhat is the key data point that indicates Ethereum's performance over the past week?

AThe price of Ethereum (ETH) increased by nearly 31% over the last seven days, and it is currently trading around $2,495.

QAccording to the main altcoin season indices mentioned in the article, why is the market not considered to be in an altcoin season yet?

AThe two major indices from CoinMarketCap and BlockchainCenter require at least 75% of top cryptocurrencies to outperform Bitcoin over 90 days to signal an altcoin season. Currently, these metrics (e.g., 43 out of 50 for BlockchainCenter) are below the required threshold.

QWhat argument does BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes make in favor of Ethereum in the current market?

AArthur Hayes argues that Ethereum is now his second-largest holding after Bitcoin, noting its potential to catch up as it has not yet reclaimed its 2021 high, carries less risk of going to zero compared to smaller tokens, and could surge past $5,000 if it decisively breaks above $3,000.

QWhat cautionary point does the article highlight about the performance of altcoins in recent history?

AThe article notes that as of late June, over 84% of altcoins were trading below their 200-day moving average, which was the longest such period since the 2022 bear market, indicating sustained weakness despite recent rallies.

QHow does analyst Darkfrost from CryptoQuant describe the current relationship between altcoins and Bitcoin?

ADarkfrost notes that while altcoins remain closely correlated with Bitcoin, a strong Bitcoin no longer automatically pulls the entire market up. This has favored short, narrow 'mini' rallies in specific liquid assets rather than broad, comprehensive market gains.

Is Bitcoin's Recent Surge a Blessing or a Trap?

Bitcoin recently surged from around $63,000 to almost $80,000. According to Glassnode, this rally is not solely due to low liquidity but driven by real capital inflows. Key factors include aggressive spot market buying, increased trading volumes, improved market depth, and significant institutional demand, as evidenced by high volumes and inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs. Derivatives market data shows investors adopting more aggressive risk management, with strong perpetual futures buying. However, a substantial increase in futures open interest points to heightened speculative activity and leverage use. On-chain metrics support the bullish activity, with growth in active addresses and asset-adjusted transfer volume, indicating accelerated user and economic activity within the network. Investor profitability has also improved significantly, with both unrealized and realized profits rising well above historical averages. This is shifting investor behavior toward profit-taking rather than loss-selling. However, Glassnode cautions that the current market structure is not yet fully based on long-term capital accumulation. It notes that "hot capital," representing short-term, price-sensitive funds, is elevated, while macroeconomic-scale capital inflows remain relatively limited. The rally appears to be supported more by active short-term investors, tactical positioning, and growing speculative appetite than by sustained, long-term accumulation.

Bitcoin Reaches $80,000: Three Arguments Against a Bull Market

Bitcoin reached $80,000 on August 24, 2026, a 38% rise from its July low of $57,800. While this surge is notable, analyst Rekt Capital presents three arguments against it signaling a true bull market reversal, suggesting it may instead be a rally within a broader bear market. First, if July 2026 was the bear market bottom, its formation time was 27% shorter than historical averages, a conclusion only valid if no new lower low forms by year-end. Second, Bitcoin broke down from a macro triangle pattern in July, but the subsequent ~30% drop was significantly smaller than the 48-62% declines seen after similar breakdowns in past cycles. Third, and crucially, the price has failed to break the long-term descending trendline from early 2025 highs, meaning Bitcoin is still making lower highs on macro timeframes, indicating underlying weakness. Rekt Capital notes the dynamic trendline resistance is near $79,000 this month, dropping to ~$76,300 next month. A monthly close below it could open the door for a correction. On weekly charts, resistance sits at $74.5k-$83.5k, with support at $62.5k-$68.5k. Adding another perspective, Crypto Rover highlights two key liquidation levels on Bitcoin's heatmap: a cluster of short positions at $80k-$90k (which could fuel a squeeze higher) and a concentration of long positions at $48k-$60k, acting as competing price "magnets." The article contrasts Rekt Capital's current cautious stance with his past calls in 2025, noting he correctly identified market direction but underestimated the scale of both the subsequent spring rally and the following autumn/winter decline. His current analysis again emphasizes macro weakness despite the recent price rise.
