On-chain data shows the Bitcoin spot volume has shown resilience recently while the rest of the cryptocurrency sector has seen a slump.

Altcoins Have Noted A Decline In Spot Activity Since Late January
As highlighted by on-chain analytics firm Glassnode in a new post on X, Bitcoin and the rest of the cryptocurrency market have diverged in terms of the spot trading volume.

The “spot trading volume” is a metric that measures, as its name suggests, the total amount of a given asset that’s becoming involved in trading activities in spot markets.

When the value of this indicator rises, it means more of the cryptocurrency is being shifted around on spot exchanges. Such a trend can be a sign that trading interest in the coin is going up.

On the other hand, the metric observing a decline suggests investor attention may be moving away from the asset as the amount of spot trades is trending down.

Now, here is the chart shared by Glassnode that shows the trend in the 7-day rolling mean value of the spot trading volume for Bitcoin, as well as combined that of the top 500 digital assets:

As is visible in the above graph, the aggregated spot volume for the top 500 cryptocurrencies has been on the way down since October of last year. This decline in trading activity has coincided with a drawdown for the market. Generally, periods with consolidation or bearish action tend to scare investors away, so the recent trend may not be surprising.

What’s interesting, however, is the trend followed by the spot volume of just Bitcoin. From the chart, it’s apparent that initially, the original cryptocurrency followed suit with the rest of the sector, but in February, its volume saw an uplift, including a huge spike that occurred alongside the sharp move down in the asset’s price.

SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce said the agency is developing a "narrower" innovation exemption for tokenized securities, as suggested by the Investor Advisory Committee.

The IAC recommended that regulatory exemptions for tokenized securities should be on a "rule-by-rule" basis rather than through a "blanket" approach.

U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's Hester Peirce stated today that the agency is developing an innovation exemption for tokenized securities, but in a more restrictive manner.

"Commission staff is working on an innovation exemption to facilitate limited trading of certain tokenized securities-much narrower than the 'blanket' exemption mentioned in the draft recommendation," Commissioner Peirce said during a SEC Investor Advisory Committee meeting on Thursday, which discussed the subject matter.

Eli Ben-Sasson, Starknet founder and Zcash cofounder, sparked a fresh wave of discussion about the legacy of Bitcoin’s creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. The trigger was an archival screenshot from the Bitcoin Talk forum dating back 16 years, which partly confirms that early Bitcoin developers not only allowed but also welcomed the creation of alternative blockchains.

Back then, Hal Finney, the first recipient of Bitcoin, was actively discussing the BitDNS project, the future Namecoin, and proposed launching it as a Bitcoin fork, a separate blockchain whose coins could be purchased with $BTC.

Was Satoshi indeed open for alternatives to Bitcoin?

The thesis that Satoshi backed altcoins, as Ben-Sasson says, can be built on several real historical facts. For example, Satoshi personally participated in the BitDNS discussion and opposed the idea of recording domain name data on Bitcoin’s main blockchain.

Moreover, Satoshi once proposed a technology that would allow new projects to survive without losing security, enabling miners to mine Bitcoin and an alternative coin simultaneously. This suggests he sought network symbiosis rather than the elimination of competitors.

Finally, both Satoshi and Finney saw Bitcoin as a foundation on which other services could be built. The concept of buying tokens with $BTC, mentioned by Finney, effectively laid the groundwork for the entire modern crypto economy.

Ethereum ($ETH) founder Vitali Buterin, who gained attention for donating altcoins sent to him as gifts, recently spoke about the $SHIB tokens he donated.

Accordingly, Vitalik Buterin shared a tweet about the donations he has made over the past five years. These donations include numerous popular memecoins, including $SHIB.

In 2021, Buterin shared details of a donation, stating that he had donated the SHIBs that the mysterious Shiba Inu founder, Ryoshi, had sent him.

Buterin stated that in 2021 he donated some of these SHIBs to an organization called the Future of Life Institute (FLI), but added that he no longer shares the same views as that organization.

In a statement from his X account, Buterin said that his $500 million donation to FLI in 2021 was used for political advocacy, deviating from the initially proposed technical roadmap.

“In 2021, I bought a large amount of $SHIB and other Dogecoins because the creators used the phrase “we own half of our Vitalik supply” as a marketing tactic and wanted to be “the next Dogecoin.”

I felt that this was definitely a bubble, that it would burst quickly and the price would drop drastically, so I sold as much as I could in $ETH and donated it. I sent half to Crypto Relief and the other half to FLI.

…However, the situation has changed significantly since 2021, and its political aspects have emerged….”

Buterin stated that he had initially thought his $SHIB donation to FLI would generate a profit of around $10-25 million, but they had managed to achieve a profit of approximately $500 million.

In a notable development in the cryptocurrency market, a significant amount of Bitcoin has flowed out of exchanges in the past week. According to data shared by blockchain data and analytics company Sentora, a net outflow of Bitcoin worth a total of $1.68 billion occurred from cryptocurrency exchanges this week.

Analysts note that large outflows of $BTC from exchanges generally indicate that investors are moving their assets to cold wallets for long-term storage. According to Sentora, recent data suggests that Bitcoin continues to be accumulated by institutional custody services as well as individual investors.

In the crypto market, asset outflows from exchanges are often seen as a positive signal that selling pressure may be easing. This is because investors may prefer to hold their assets for longer periods by moving them to secure wallets outside of exchanges, rather than engaging in short-term trading.

According to the data, Bitcoin’s price has also risen in the last 24 hours. Market data shows that $BTC is trading at approximately $73,503 at the time of publication, having gained 4.71% on a daily basis.

Experts say that renewed interest in the market, particularly from institutional investors, could support a recovery in Bitcoin’s price. Accumulations made through institutional custody services are considered part of long-term investment strategies.

The recent downward trend in Bitcoin reserves on exchanges also supports this view. Analysts note that the continued net outflows from exchanges could reduce the supply in the market and, if demand remains strong, could put upward pressure on the price.

Bitcoin ($BTC) and gold continue to move in opposite directions. In this context, JPMorgan has revealed the latest data between $BTC and gold and the sharp divergence between them.

US banking giant JPMorgan stated that $BTC and gold ETFs have seen opposing flows since the US-Iran war.

According to The Block, JPMorgan analysts have noted a significant contrast in Bitcoin and gold ETF flows since the start of the conflict in Iran.

JPMorgan analysts led by Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou stated in their latest report that SPDR Gold Shares (GLD), the largest gold ETF, has experienced outflows equivalent to approximately 2.7% of its holdings since the war. In contrast, BlackRock iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), the largest spot Bitcoin ETF, recorded inflows equivalent to approximately 1.5% of its holdings during the same period.

Analysts noted that this significant divergence stemmed from investors shifting their positions between the two assets.

"We are seeing investors rebalancing their positions between gold and Bitcoin."

Analysts also added that there are signs that Bitcoin's volatility is gradually decreasing as institutional investment increases and market liquidity improves.
