The First Bitcoin Transaction Turns 17. Who Received These Coins
The first Bitcoin transaction occurred 17 years ago on January 12, 2009, when its anonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, sent 10 BTC to developer Hal Finney. This event marked the symbolic beginning of the digital currency era. At current prices, those coins would be worth approximately $900,000.
Hal Finney, who passed away in 2014 from complications of ALS, was a pioneering cryptographer and a key early supporter of Bitcoin. He was an active member of the cypherpunk movement, co-authored the PGP encryption system, and was one of the few people with whom Satoshi Nakamoto actively corresponded. Finney helped debug Bitcoin's early code and was its first user.
Finney himself made an early and remarkably prescient prediction that if Bitcoin succeeded, a single coin could theoretically be worth $10 million. He acquired his bitcoin through mining and stored them offline for his heirs. Although he denied it, his deep cryptographic expertise and early involvement have led to persistent speculation that he might have been Satoshi Nakamoto. His legacy is that of a fundamental contributor to the blockchain and privacy technology industries.
