Vitalik Buterin calls for the Ethereum community to break free from path dependency and rethink the ecosystem’s application layer from first principles. He emphasizes the importance of preserving core properties—censorship resistance, open source, privacy, and security (CROPS)—while encouraging more radical openness in how applications and external interfaces are designed. He suggests reevaluating technical assumptions, such as the future of browser plugins and mobile wallets in light of AI advancements, and proposes rebuilding the stack with privacy as a foundational priority. Examples include reimagining DeFi as generalized futures markets built on decentralized oracles, possibly verified via zk-SNARKs and LLMs, and reconsidering the role of L2s. Buterin also highlights cultural shifts, advocating for a break from conventional “professional” norms to unlock greater creativity. He urges developers to ignore existing ecosystem constraints, pretend current usage is zero, and imagine the most valuable applications as if starting from scratch today. In response to a comment, he clarifies that integration with traditional finance remains important for mainstream adoption, but the goal is to overcome internal path dependencies within Ethereum’s own application and wallet history—for instance, by exploring privacy-focused designs like Railgun or Aztec for payments without exposing addresses.

Deep Tide Introduction: On March 6, Vitalik published a lengthy article directly pointing out that the Ethereum community has long been trapped in a "path dependency" mindset: always making incremental improvements based on the existing ecosystem, rather than reimagining the possibilities of the application layer from first principles. He called on Ethereum enthusiasts to "take off their suits and ties" and re-examine DeFi, decentralized social networks, identity authentication, and even the intersection of AI and privacy with a bolder and more open mindset.

Full text as follows:

I believe that we in the Ethereum world should maintain a bolder and more open mindset about many things—especially in the application layer and in how we view our position in the world.

Core attributes are non-negotiable: Censorship Resistance, Open Source, Privacy, Security (CROPS). We should not distort "open-mindedness" into a state where people have no certainty about which security attributes the L1 will retain a year from now. We should not ask questions like, "Do we really need light clients to trustlessly verify the correctness of the chain?" But especially at the application layer and at the interface between Ethereum and the external world, we should be more willing to fundamentally rethink various concepts and step out of our comfort zones.

This includes technical direction questions, such as: "What if the development of AI basically means that browser extensions and mobile wallets will become obsolete within a year?"

An example from last year is the shift in mindset—treating privacy as a top priority on par with other security attributes. This implies a completely different Ethereum application stack, as the entire tech stack so far has not been built around privacy. Well, then let's build a completely different Ethereum application stack!

An example this year is the increasing work on network layer privacy, both inside and outside the Ethereum Foundation.

This also includes application layer questions, such as: "What if the rest of DeFi is essentially just a general futures market built on top of high-quality decentralized oracles, allowing users to self-organize on that basis?" and "What if the ideal decentralized oracle is just an M-of-N small LLM SNARK verification of zk-TLS data from several major news websites?"

(By the way, this is interconnected with the AI topic: one consequence of AI is that it pushes "applications" from discrete categories of behavior with discrete UIs into a continuous space. Therefore, the pattern of "building fewer applications and relying on users to self-organize on them" will inevitably expand as a paradigm.)

Another example this year is rethinking the role of L2s from scratch—what kind of L2 truly creates the greatest synergy and enhancement with Ethereum.

This also involves the cultural level. This is an important reason why I, @AyaMiyagotchi, and others are deeply associated with "this milady thing." Yes, it's a silly, cute meme. Yes, I find some milady supporters' political views embarrassing, sometimes even blatant bootlicking (of course, there are other milady supporters who are the exact opposite). But the core underlying meaning, the "message behind the message" is: take off the suit and tie. If you're wearing a suit and tie, be willing to grab the nearest glass and pour it on your suit tie, leaving yourself no choice but to tear it off and regain the full flexibility and freedom of your body. The next time you're invited to one of those formal dinners full of rich people, really imagine yourself doing this. Write the preconception "I am a respectable person" on a piece of paper, crumple it up, and burn it. This psychological baptism will lead to an intellectual baptism—unlocking greater creativity and expanding the boundaries of possibility.

For too long, our algorithm in Ethereum has been: we have this existing ecosystem, what is the next logical step to make it a little bit better? Now, our algorithm should be: we have this excellent L1 that will become even more excellent, we have an increasingly rich set of tools—both built within our ecosystem and from outside—so, with everything we have today, what is the most valuable thing?

If you were to write the chapter on applications in the 2014 Ethereum whitepaper, thinking from first principles about what truly makes sense in DeFi, decentralized social networks, identity authentication, and other areas, what would you write? At least take this step: zero out all path dependency concerns, pretend that Ethereum chain usage is zero today, you are the first person proposing or building an application, and see what emerges. Even if you are the one building today's existing applications, please do this.

This is how Ethereum becomes powerful again.

@dcposch:

Zeroing out path dependency for "wallets" and such—100% agree. Usage is approximately zero anyway, and many entrenched product decisions are completely wrong.

Zeroing out path dependency for off-chain finance—100% disagree.

The "monetary signal" that can truly bring liberating value to 100 million users necessarily involves smooth integration with fiat channels and issuer assets, that's undeniable. It doesn't have to stop there, nor be locked into these things. It can be open source, substantially better in privacy, accessibility, and censorship resistance. But it must respect this specific path dependency—otherwise, we're just stuck on a geek island amusing ourselves.

@vitalikburterin:

Yes, I completely agree, it's entirely reasonable for payment apps/wallets/Agent-like products aimed at mainstream users to integrate with traditional finance, allowing users to deposit and withdraw.

The path dependency I hope we get rid of is mainly the path dependency on the Ethereum application/wallet ecosystem's own history.

A random example: if you're just making a payment app, you could explore not exposing 0x addresses at all (maybe use one-time addresses only for deposits, and of course also allow withdrawals to other people's addresses), with all payments done inside Railgun or Aztec.

QWhat is the core argument that Vitalik Buterin makes about the current state of the Ethereum community in his latest essay?

AVitalik argues that the Ethereum community has fallen into a 'path dependency' mindset, focusing on incremental improvements within the existing ecosystem rather than reimagining the application layer from first principles. He calls for a bolder, more open-minded approach to rethinking DeFi, decentralized social, identity, and the intersection with AI and privacy.

QAccording to Vitalik, what are the core properties of Ethereum that should never be compromised?

AThe core properties that should never be compromised are CROPS: Censorship resistance, open source, privacy, and security.

QWhat cultural shift does Vitalik advocate for to foster greater creativity within the Ethereum ecosystem?

AVitalik advocates for a cultural shift of 'taking off the suit and tie,' which is a metaphor for shedding the preconception of being a 'respectable person' and embracing a more radical, free, and open mindset to unlock greater creativity and expand the boundaries of what is possible.

QIn the context of AI's development, what new paradigm does Vitalik suggest for application design?

AVitalik suggests that AI will shift applications from discrete categories with discrete UIs to a continuous space. This will expand the paradigm of 'building less and relying more on users to self-organize' on top of the provided infrastructure.

QHow does Vitalik respond to the commenter @dcposch's concern about integrating with the traditional financial system?

AVitalik agrees that payment applications and wallets for mainstream users need to integrate with traditional finance to allow deposits and withdrawals. He clarifies that the path dependency he wants to escape is not this integration, but rather the path dependency on the Ethereum application/wallet ecosystem's own history, and he gives an example of exploring payment apps that don't expose 0x addresses and perform all transactions on privacy-focused layers like Railgun or Aztec.

BIP-110 Controversy Intensifies: Bitcoin May Face Its Most Divisive Hard Fork Battle in Years

Bitcoin is approaching a critical block height of 961,632, which could activate the controversial BIP-110 proposal. This proposal aims to restrict the amount of non-financial data, such as inscriptions and other large data payloads, within Bitcoin transactions. Supporters, including some node operators and Bitcoin purists, argue that BIP-110 is necessary to preserve Bitcoin's core function as a monetary settlement layer by reducing network congestion and node operational burdens caused by non-essential data. They frame it as a correction to keep the network true to its original purpose. However, critics, including prominent figures like Blockstream's Adam Back and developer Jameson Lopp, warn that the proposal's implementation mechanism is dangerously flawed. They highlight that its low 55% miner signaling threshold, coupled with a contentious enforcement mechanism allowing nodes to unilaterally reject non-compliant blocks, significantly increases the risk of a chain split. Opponents argue this sets a dangerous precedent for transaction censorship, undermines Bitcoin's protocol neutrality, and creates excessive uncertainty for developers and businesses, especially since the rule is proposed as a temporary one-year measure. Market analysts, such as those from Bitfinex, suggest a full-scale network split is unlikely due to a lack of broad economic consensus. Major mining pools remain neutral, and adoption of the new rules is minimal. They view the situation more as a governance stress test. The primary risk is operational disruption: if a minority chain persists, major exchanges and custodians may need to temporarily suspend Bitcoin deposits and withdrawals to manage security and liquidity, potentially unsettling newer institutional investors. While BIP-110 is not expected to succeed in overtaking the main chain, its approach has ignited a significant debate about Bitcoin's governance, core values, and resilience.

NEAR to Airdrop 330,000 Tokens, Betting on TVL Reaching $70 Million

On June 11th, NEAR Protocol launched the Near@3.33 Milestone Incentive Program, targeting users of its Confidential Intents privacy cross-chain execution feature. The program will distribute 333,333 milestone tokens when the Confidential Intents Total Value Locked (TVL) reaches $70 million. Users must have conducted Confidential transactions on near.com and maintain a Confidential balance above $100 in any asset to qualify, with a single wallet capped at 2% of the current airdrop pool. The milestone tokens will be locked upon receipt and cannot be sold or transferred. They can only be converted 1:1 to NEAR tokens once NEAR's Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) maintains $3.33 or higher for three consecutive trading days. As of the report, Confidential Intents TVL exceeds $20.69 million, needing roughly a 3x increase to trigger the airdrop. Confidential Intents, launched in February 2026, is NEAR's privacy execution layer designed to prevent MEV, front-running, and strategy leaks by building confidentiality directly into the execution environment. Its TVL has grown from zero to approximately $15 million in about three months. NEAR token price, which surged from around $1 in April to a peak of $3.08, currently trades near $2. The program aims to boost user activity for Confidential Intents, with future incentive rounds planned as community engagement increases.

Crypto Market Makers Are Collectively Seeking Change as Money Becomes Harder to Earn

**Summary: Crypto Market Makers Adapt as Margins Shrink** Leading crypto market maker GSR exemplifies a broader industry shift, moving beyond traditional market-making to become a full-service "Web3 investment bank." Its recent strategic acquisitions—including an SEC-registered broker-dealer, rebranded as GSR Securities—and purchases of token advisory firms aim to create an integrated platform covering token design, fundraising, listing, liquidity provision, and asset management. This includes launching an ETF and investing in tokenization platforms like Libeara, backed by a strategic investment from Standard Chartered's SC Ventures. This transformation is not unique to GSR. Other major players like Keyrock, B2C2, Wintermute, and DWF Labs are also expanding geographically, pursuing regulatory licenses (especially under frameworks like MiCA in the EU), and diversifying into over-the-counter (OTC) trading, asset management, and real-world asset tokenization. The driving force behind this collective pivot is a rapidly changing market. Profits from traditional altcoin market-making are declining due to fewer viable projects, reduced client budgets, increased competition, and smarter, more demanding clients. Simultaneously, regulatory pressures are mounting, making compliance a baseline cost. Extreme market events further expose teams lacking robust risk controls. Consequently, the crypto market-making business model is evolving from one reliant on information asymmetry and volatility to a more institutionalized, regulated, and service-diverse industry. Survival now depends on building systemic capabilities beyond mere liquidity provision.
