Global Top 10 Assets Reshuffle in 2025: Why Has Bitcoin Lost Its Shine?

In 2025, global asset markets experienced significant shifts, with traditional hard assets like gold and silver dominating while Bitcoin underperformed. Gold surged over 65% to approximately $43,100 per ounce, reaching a theoretical market cap of $30 trillion, while silver rose 150% to $72, driven by geopolitical tensions, inflation, and industrial demand from AI and solar sectors. Major AI-related tech stocks like Nvidia and TSMC saw solid gains but entered a consolidation phase. Bitcoin, despite briefly hitting $126,000 mid-year, ended 2025 around $88,000 with an 8% annual loss—marking its first negative post-halving year. Key factors included macro liquidity tightening, increased correlation with equities, large-scale selling by long-term holders, excessive leverage unwinding ($30 billion in derivatives), and slowing institutional inflows, especially from ETFs in Q4. Looking ahead to 2026, analysts remain broadly optimistic. Institutions like J.P. Morgan, Standard Chartered, and Bernstein project targets between $140,000 and $170,000, citing potential ETF-driven demand, regulatory clarity, and macro improvements. However, skeptics like Bloomberg’s Mike McGlone warn of a possible drop to $50,000 or lower due to speculative risks. Overall, 2026 is seen as a potential rebound year for Bitcoin, contingent on macro conditions and institutional adoption.

Where Did the Money Go? A Survival Guide to the Future 'Dollar Shortage'

"Where Did the Money Go? A Survival Guide for the Coming 'Dollar Shortage'" by Tiezhu Ge discusses the evolving nature of U.S. dollar liquidity, arguing it is no longer solely determined by the Federal Reserve's balance sheet but increasingly by the willingness and ability of Global Systemically Important Banks (G-SIBs) to act as financial intermediaries. The article explains that post-2025, dollar liquidity has shifted from a quantity constraint to an "intermediation constraint." Key regulatory frameworks like Basel III, particularly the Supplementary Leverage Ratio (SLR) and Liquidity Coverage Ratio (LCR), limit banks' capacity to expand their balance sheets. This makes them reluctant to engage in low-return activities like Treasury market-making and repo lending, especially during quarter-ends when regulatory compliance is scrutinized. This can lead to repo rate spikes (SOFR), forced Treasury sell-offs by funds, and heightened market volatility. The analysis framework for dollar tightness includes monitoring offshore dollar funding costs (e.g., cross-currency basis swaps like USD/JPY), onshore repo market pressures (SOFR vs. IORB), and bank behavior (e.g., use of the Fed's Standing Repo Facility). The author warns that without SLR relief, a scenario of easy monetary policy but tight credit could prevail. This creates asymmetric risks where liquidity can vanish quickly, potentially causing simultaneous stock and bond market declines (breaking the 60/40 portfolio). The guide advises holding cash for defense and considering gold/commodities as hedges, while cautioning that low-liquidity assets are highly vulnerable to sudden crashes.

AI Industry Welcomes a Cash-Rich Tether

Tether, the company behind the stablecoin USDT, reported a staggering $13 billion profit in 2024, significantly outperforming major AI companies like OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which incurred substantial losses. With only 150 employees, Tether achieved a per capita output 60 times greater than OpenAI’s. Its business model is simple: for every USDT issued, Tether holds one US dollar, primarily investing these reserves in U.S. Treasury bonds. It earns the interest income without paying any to USDT holders. In 2024, interest alone contributed $7 billion to its profits. Now, Tether is aggressively investing in AI. It loaned over $600 million to Northern Data, Europe’s largest GPU cloud provider, acquiring what is effectively an AI training base. It also released QVAC Genesis, a massive open-source AI training dataset. Furthermore, Tether invested $200 million in Blackrock Neurotech, a pioneering brain-computer interface company. Additional investments in robotics could bring its total AI-related spending to nearly $2 billion. Tether’s move into AI may be driven by both anxiety over declining Treasury yields and ambition to establish itself as a tech leader. Ironically, it promotes "decentralized AI" despite being a highly centralized company itself. While OpenAI and Anthropic struggle with profitability and continuous fundraising, Tether leverages its highly profitable stablecoin business to fund its AI ambitions risk-free, making a paradoxical case that the best business model in AI might be not to do AI at all.
