This Public Company Quietly Controls 20% of Ethena's ENA Token Supply

Abstract

A publicly traded company, StablecoinX, has disclosed it controls approximately 20% of the ENA governance token supply from the stablecoin issuer Ethena. Following a merger that took it public, StablecoinX holds a substantial treasury of 284.95 million ENA tokens, valued at over $218 million as of June 30. This represents a concentrated strategic bet on the success of Ethena and its USDe stablecoin. The company reported a significant quarterly loss, largely due to an impairment charge on its ENA holdings, highlighting the balance sheet volatility from holding such crypto assets. Despite this, its adjusted operational loss was minimal. StablecoinX is expanding beyond being a mere ENA wrapper, developing infrastructure services like its cross-chain verification node and the Harness platform for enterprise stablecoin management. The investment thesis ties StablecoinX's public market fortunes directly to Ethena's ecosystem growth, USDe adoption, ENA token price, and evolving stablecoin regulations. Future performance will depend on whether its operational revenue grows sustainably, USDe maintains stability and user trust, and how the gap between its stock price and the value of its digital asset treasury evolves.

A New York company disclosed this stake in its quarterly earnings report for the period ending June 30. StablecoinX began trading under the ticker USDE on June 26, the day after completing its merger with TLGY Acquisition Corp., turning the crypto treasury into publicly traded shares.

$ENA is Ethena's governance token, an asset used for voting on certain protocol matters and, within Ethena's structure, potentially enabling a share in the ecosystem's economy. In simple terms, StablecoinX is not just building its business around Ethena. It now has a seat at the negotiating table.

A Major Bet on Ethena

The Ethena Fund provided 284.95 million $ENA tokens, while PIPE investors in the merger contributed approximately an additional 2.75 billion in cash and tokens. This is not a passive investment. It is a concentrated bet on the project behind $USDe.

At the June 30 closing price of $ENA of $0.07204, StablecoinX valued its treasury's market worth at $218.4 million. The balance sheet states $212.9 million because accounting rules require the company to record these digital assets at their initial cost minus any impairments, rather than simply revaluing them daily at market prices.

It is within this accounting nuance that the first signs of potential trouble appear. Volatile swings in the price of $ENA can lead to paper losses, even if the token count remains unchanged. StablecoinX reported a quarterly net loss of $34.2 million, largely due to a $36.2 million impairment charge on $ENA, while its adjusted net loss was only $188,204.

$USDe Links Treasury Bonds to the Dollar

$USDe aims to trade around $1 but does not rely solely on the familiar reserve model of cash and Treasury bills. Ethena uses hedged crypto positions and other collateral, while sUSDe is a version that gives users access to the yields generated by the system.

The math of benefit is clear. More $USDe in circulation could mean more protocol fees, and Ethena claims that anticipated growth will support $ENA holders through a revenue-sharing system. StablecoinX has essentially tied its public company narrative to this cycle and continues to operate.

By July 31, the supply of Ethena's $USDe reached $3.9 billion. The company reported cumulative protocol fees exceeding $800 million since launch and a collateral ratio of about 101.7%, meaning stated collateral exceeded the circulating $USDe supply at that time.

Investors will subject these numbers to constant stress tests. A surplus is not a permanent shield against funding issues, trading disruptions, regulatory moves, or sudden mass redemptions. $ENA itself remains a volatile crypto asset, and its price could quickly turn an optimistic treasury scenario into a balance sheet nightmare.

StablecoinX Develops Operational Business Lines

StablecoinX is attempting to show it is more than just a public market "wrapper" for $ENA. According to the company, its decentralized verifier node, which validates and relays messages between blockchains, processed a cumulative cross-chain transaction volume of over $3 billion by August 12.

Additionally, the company launched an early version of the StablecoinX Harness platform, designed to provide businesses with a unified software solution for working with stablecoins instead of needing to patch together multiple services. Over the last two weeks of June, the company earned $62,372 in infrastructure revenue, and in July it signed its first Harness client.

Management plans to add distribution services in 2027, market and regulators permitting. This division is intended to give investors indirect access to $USDe — a goal that would allow StablecoinX to embed itself more deeply in an industry where product design and regulatory approval can quickly alter the economics.

Stablecoin Investors Gain a Listed Instrument

StablecoinX provides equity investors with a way to gain exposure to one crypto ecosystem without directly owning $ENA. The trade-off is risk concentration: the treasury's fortunes, corporate strategy, and stock market appeal rise or fall based on the growth of Ethena and $USDe, the price of $ENA, and the rules governing stablecoins.

Future reports will show whether operational activities can move beyond the initial infrastructure revenue spike, whether $USDe retains its users and resilience, and whether new regulations impact the development plan. Investors will also monitor the $ENA portfolio, new impairment losses, and the widening or narrowing gap between the USDE share price and the company's digital asset treasury (DAT) strategy.

Roman Storm Accuses Google and OpenAI in Connection with U.S. Department of Justice Ruling on Cryptocurrency Case

Roman Storm, founder of the cryptocurrency anonymization protocol Tornado Cash, convicted in August 2025 for conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money-transmitting business, has accused Google and OpenAI of facilitating North Korea's nuclear program. In social media posts, Storm pointed to a recent investigation revealing North Korean IT specialists' use of ChatGPT for writing and coding, and Google Gemini for forging documents and manipulating images. He argued that, under the same legal logic the U.S. Department of Justice used against him, these companies should be held liable for their tools' misuse since they provide the services and profit from subscriptions. Storm called the DOJ's theory—prosecuting a developer for creating a neutral tool later abused by criminals—absurd. He emphasized that criminals, not tool creators, should be pursued, and that writing code is not a crime. The Tornado Cash verdict sets a negative U.S. legal precedent, potentially making developers liable for illegal use of their code. Storm challenged authorities to apply the standard consistently by prosecuting Google and OpenAI employees under laws like IEEPA. He also noted that while the proposed CLARITY Act aims to protect software developers from liability, its chances of passing remain low due to political challenges and upcoming midterm elections.
