The Government Pension Fund Global, one of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds, has announced the acquisition of a significant stake in BitMine Immersion Technologies, a company known for its Ethereum holdings. According to the fund's latest filings, it owns approximately 6.15 million shares of BitMine, valued at around $81.87 million.
This investment is notable as the Norwegian sovereign fund gains indirect exposure to $ETH through a publicly traded company, rather than by purchasing Ethereum directly. The fact that one of the world's largest investment funds is avoiding direct investments in crypto-assets, focusing instead on companies with substantial digital assets on their balance sheets, is being closely watched by the market.
The published documents do not contain information on when the shares were acquired or what the fund's average cost per share was. However, the fact that BitMine was not included in the fund's 2025 portfolio report suggests the investment was made in recent months.
BitMine Immersion Technologies has recently become one of the most talked-about companies in the cryptocurrency sector due to its Ethereum accumulation strategy. According to a statement published on August 9th, the company holds approximately 5.805 million $ETH in its reserves. This amount represents a significant portion of Ethereum's circulating supply.
The company also reported that it has placed approximately 5.067 million of its $ETH into staking. Thus, BitMine is not only holding Ethereum but is also earning staking income by validating the network.
Market experts note that the Norwegian sovereign wealth fund's investment in BitMine is further evidence of the ongoing, albeit indirect, growth in interest from traditional financial institutions in the Ethereum and digital asset ecosystem. Such investments are considered an important indicator of institutional adoption.
