A single data center can consume 3.6 times more electricity and significant water compared to a small city’s residential use, threatening local resources. Organized opposition groups have grown from 142 to 188 in a year, halting or delaying projects worth $162 billion. The bottleneck for AI expansion is shifting from power contracts to local politics, where grassroots resistance is intensifying.
