What is Decred (DCR)

1. Project Introduction
Decred is a blockchain-based cryptocurrency focused on open governance, community engagement, and sustainable funding. It uses a hybrid Proof-of-Work (PoW) and Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus system to prevent any minority group from unilaterally controlling the network. Originating from a 2013 Bitcointalk proposal called Memcoin2, Decred officially launched its mainnet on February 8, 2016. The hybrid consensus ensures enhanced security, resistance to 51% and long-range attacks, and better scalability due to PoS’s low energy requirements. Features like atomic swaps and privacy tools further enhance Decred’s security and usability.
2. Team & Investment Info
Led by Jake Yocom-Piatt, who, along with his team, had previously contributed to an alternative Bitcoin client before launching Decred in 2014 due to concerns about Bitcoin’s lack of community inclusion.
