No Bitcoin Sell-Off At GameStop, 4,710 BTC Still On Books
Two months of speculation ended when GameStop confirmed it did not sell its Bitcoin. Instead, the company pledged 4,709 BTC to Coinbase Credit as collateral for a covered-call options strategy. This move, initially misinterpreted as a sell-off, involves selling call options with strike prices between $105,000 and $110,000. The company collects premiums and retains the Bitcoin if options expire unexercised.
Although the coins were reclassified on the balance sheet as a digital asset receivable due to rehypothecation, GameStop's exposure to Bitcoin’s price remains unchanged. The position has resulted in significant unrealized losses, valued at over $59 million as of January 31, alongside a $2.3 million unrealized gain from the options. The company continues to hold one Bitcoin separately. CEO Ryan Cohen’s meeting with Michael Saylor preceded GameStop’s initial Bitcoin acquisition.
