Ripple Announces RLUSD Growth Strategy: L2 Expansion On Ethereum Planned For 2026

Abstract

Ripple has announced a multichain expansion strategy for its RLUSD stablecoin, planning integration with Ethereum Layer-2 solutions through a partnership with Wormhole. Initial testing will occur on networks like Optimism, Base, Ink, and Unichain using Wormhole’s NTT standard for cross-chain liquidity. Launched on XRPL and Ethereum, RLUSD aims to enhance DeFi accessibility and institutional adoption. With a $1.3 billion market cap, it is the third-largest US-regulated stablecoin. Ripple also piloted a credit card settlement program with Mastercard, WebBank, and Gemini using RLUSD on XRPL for instant transactions. Meanwhile, XRP’s price dropped to $1.90 amid a broader market correction.

Ripple, the issuer of the fast-growing RLUSD stablecoin, has recently announced an ambitious multichain strategy aimed at enhancing its presence in the crypto space.

This initiative will see RLUSD integrated into Layer-2 (L2) solutions on the Ethereum (ETH) blockchain, facilitated by a partnership with Wormhole, one of the largest protocols for cross-chain interoperability.

Ripple Targets Broader Blockchain Integration

In a press release issued on Monday, Ripple and Wormhole detailed their plans to initiate testing on several notable L2 networks, including Optimism (OP), Base, Ink, and Unichain.

The collaboration will leverage Wormhole’s Native Token Transfers (NTT) standard, which is designed to ensure efficient movement of liquidity across various blockchain ecosystems while allowing Ripple to maintain native control over RLUSD.

Originally launched on both the XRP Ledger (XRPL) and Ethereum, RLUSD aims to enhance cross-chain functionalities and decentralized finance (DeFi) opportunities.

Jack McDonald, Senior Vice President of Stablecoin at Ripple, emphasized the significance of stablecoins in the DeFi landscape, stating:

Stablecoins are the gateway to DeFi and institutional adoption. RLUSD is designed from the ground up to be the trusted, liquid medium necessary for users to seamlessly enter, interact with, and exit the entire digital asset economy.

The executive also highlighted that by launching RLUSD as the first US Trust Regulated stablecoin on these L2 networks, Ripple is also setting a standard where compliance meets on-chain efficiency. Looking toward, Ripple plans to launch RLUSD on additional chains, pending final regulatory approval.

RLUSD Becomes Third-Largest US-Regulated Stablecoin

Notably, RLUSD has achieved a market capitalization of $1.3 billion in less than a year, making it the third-largest stablecoin among US-regulated options, according to CoinGecko data.

Positioned for compliance with the GENIUS Act, RLUSD’s circulating supply surged by 28% in November alone, crossing the billion-dollar threshold. It currently ranks behind only Circle’s USDC and PayPal’s PYUSD in the US-regulated dollar tokens.

In a significant development in November of this year, Ripple also initiated a new pilot program with traditional finance giants Mastercard, WebBank, and crypto exchange Gemini aimed at facilitating credit card transaction settlements using RLUSD on the XRP Ledger.

This partnership allows WebBank to send RLUSD over the XRPL for instant settlement of daily payment obligations with Mastercard, eliminating the traditional delays associated with bank ACH transfers.

Ripple’s president, Monica Long, described this pilot as a “meaningful step” toward demonstrating how regulated digital assets can expedite institutional payment processes.

XRP, which is also associated with the company, is trading at $1.90. This represents a 5% drop over the past 24 hours, in line with the broader correction in the crypto market cap, which has seen Bitcoin (BTC) and other leading altcoins resume the downtrend witnessed over the past two months.

POAP Shuts Down: The Conclusion of an On-Chain Commemorative Badge Experiment

On August 3rd, POAP co-founder Isabel Gonzalez announced the platform's shutdown after over five years of operation. The service, which began phasing out in March by entering maintenance mode, will now cease entirely, though previously minted POAP badges remain viewable on-chain. POAP originated at the 2019 ETHDenver hackathon, where founder Patricio Worthalter distributed the first digital badges as on-chain proof of attendance. It gained significant traction during the 2021 NFT boom, becoming a staple for community events, conferences, and AMAs. POAPs evolved into a form of digital resume, used for gating access, airdrop whitelisting, and measuring DAO contributions. Major brands like Adidas and Porsche also adopted it for marketing. Despite securing a $10 million seed round in 2022 and amassing over 6.7 million minted badges by mid-2023, POAP struggled post-bull market. A shift to charging commercial clients in 2023 failed to ensure long-term sustainability. Gonzalez acknowledged the platform found a clear niche but no viable business model within it. POAP joins other discontinued NFT experiments, such as Starbucks' Odyssey, Meta's Instagram NFT features, and Reddit's Collectible Avatars. These projects shared a common flaw: treating blockchain as an end rather than a tool for genuinely needed solutions. POAP's story is particularly poignant—it wasn't speculative but faced a ceiling; the demand for digital mementos proved too niche to support a venture-backed company. The badges endure on the blockchain, but the platform behind them has departed.

72-Hour Countdown: Can the CLARITY Act Pass 'Miracleously' Before the Senate Recess?

"CLARITY Act Faces 72-Hour Deadline as Senate Recess Looms The U.S. Senate has released its schedule for the week, omitting the crucial CLARITY Act and instead prioritizing another resolution for a procedural vote. With the Senate set to recess on August 7th, the bill now has only about 72 hours to advance. Senate procedural hurdles are steep. First, a cloture petition requires signatures from 16 Senators. Second, a vote requires 60 votes, meaning the Republican's 53 votes need at least 7 Democratic supporters—a key sticking point that has stalled the bill for two months. If passed, a further 30 hours of debate is required before a vote to proceed to consideration. If 16 signatures are not secured by Wednesday, the bill won't even face a vote. Even if filed Wednesday, the earliest vote would be Friday, leaving no time for actual consideration before recess. The major divide remains ethical provisions. The draft bans certain senior officials from issuing or sponsoring digital assets until 2029, but Democrats argue enforcement loopholes are too large, failing to constrain existing holdings and family arrangements. The White House has not formally responded to the revised draft. The Trump family's substantial crypto profits have further eroded Democratic trust. Stablecoin rewards remain contentious. Banks liken them to deposit interest, fearing capital flight, while crypto firms see them as anti-competitive protection for banks. A current compromise bans passive interest but allows rewards for trading, staking, and platform activity. Polymarket data shows the bill's probability of passing by 2026 has fallen to 31%, down 7 points in a week. Betting volume is around $3.7 million. Analyst Bernstein warns failure to advance the bill could trigger a 'bad news' sell-off, pressuring Bitcoin and crypto valuations. Industry advocates, including Grayscale and Treasury Secretary (presumably Yellen, though 'Besant' appears in text), have urged swift action with thousands of contacts to Congress, but progress remains slow. If missed this week, the bill delays until September, where a busier schedule and approaching midterms complicate passage. Democrats suggest a procedural vote this week could keep hope alive for September, but that hope is fading hourly. Market sentiment appears resigned to delay, though a surprise passage could trigger a significant positive reaction. The bill's arduous journey underscores its potential impact on the industry."
