Sentinel (P2P) represents a transformative approach to decentralized bandwidth sharing and privacy-focused internet infrastructure. Originally launched as a decentralized virtual private network (dVPN) protocol, Sentinel has evolved into a layer-one blockchain specializing in decentralized physical infrastructure networks (DePIN). By leveraging blockchain technology, Sentinel enables peer-to-peer (P2P) bandwidth trading, supports AI data acquisition, and provides a foundation for censorship-resistant internet services. This report synthesizes technical architecture, ecosystem growth, and key innovations that position Sentinel as a leader in decentralized networking solutions.
Sentinel aims to democratize access to internet infrastructure by decentralizing bandwidth provisioning. Unlike traditional VPNs operated by centralized entities, Sentinel’s network distributes authority across node operators, validators, and users, eliminating single points of failure and surveillance risks. The protocol’s native token, $P2P (formerly $DVPN), facilitates governance, staking, and payments within its ecosystem.
Key objectives include:
Sentinel employs a modular blockchain architecture comprising three interconnected chains:
This separation ensures scalability, with the Service Chain supporting high-throughput microtransactions critical for bandwidth markets.
Sentinel uses a bonded Proof-of-Stake (bPOS) system, where over 80 validators secure the network. Validators must stake $P2P tokens, incentivizing honest participation while allowing token holders to delegate stakes for passive income.
The node marketplace enables individuals to sell excess bandwidth as “exit nodes” or “relay nodes.” Consumers pay node operators in $P2P, with 20% of fees distributed to stakers as rewards. This model aligns incentives between bandwidth providers, validators, and users.
In 2018, Sentinel was launched initially as a testnet project under an earlier ticker while focusing on dVPN development. The project made a significant transition in March 2021 when it migrated to the Cosmos SDK, rebranding the token to $DVPN, reflecting its dedication to decentralized VPN capabilities. By May 2021, the integration with Cosmos IBC was achieved, enabling cross-chain bandwidth sharing and interoperability.
The year 2022 saw the introduction of the Sentinel Shield dVPN, featuring enhanced firewall evasion using HTTPS/TLS camouflage. Moreover, in June 2024, Sentinel announced the AI Data Layer, offering a decentralized platform for sourcing training data through bandwidth contributions. By December 2024, Sentinel surpassed 200,000 unique dVPN users, largely thanks to partnerships with various third-party clients.
In May 2025, Sentinel underwent a rebranding of its token to $P2P to signify its evolution into a generalized bandwidth protocol. A notable development was the deployment of an IBC-Ethereum bridge, which enabled $P2P liquidity on decentralized exchanges, thus broadening investor access.
The project is spearheaded by Dan Edlebeck, co-founder and CEO of Exidio, who has played a crucial role in the migration to Cosmos and on-going protocol development. Zac Wickstrom, CEO of Valt Data, another significant figure in the Sentinel ecosystem, focuses on promoting mainstream adoption through user-friendly dVPN clients.
Sentinel’s network is maintained by decentralized validators, including MathNodes, NORSE Labs, and various community-led teams. Open-source SDKs empower third-party developers to create customized dVPNs and bandwidth-sharing applications.
Sentinel raised $3.5 million in a 2021 seed round led by notable investment foundations, including Genblock Capital and Woodstock Fund, along with participation from Advanced Blockchain AG and Zokyo. These funds played a pivotal role in transitioning Sentinel to Cosmos and developing its node marketplace.
While in 2022, a cybersecurity firm launched a substantial fund aimed at targeting decentralized infrastructure, there has been no direct investment in Sentinel (P2P) confirmed. Sentinel also operates the Growth DAO, which funds developers through grants, further enhancing its ecosystem.
The uniqueness of Sentinel’s dVPNs lies in their ability to route traffic through a diverse network of independent nodes. This system, which utilizes V2Ray protocols, efficiently masks traffic as standard HTTPS, allowing users to circumvent restrictive firewalls prevalent in many regions.
The introduction of the AI Data Layer stands out as an innovation that repurposes bandwidth contributions to collect anonymized training data for machine learning models. Node operators earn $P2P for their computational contributions, thus creating a dual-purpose network.
Stakeholders are empowered through the governance model, wherein $P2P holders can vote on protocol upgrades, fee structures, and treasury allocations, ensuring that stakeholders have a direct influence on the future trajectory of the protocol.
As decentralized bandwidth markets grow, they inevitably face scrutiny under various legal frameworks, particularly concerning data localization and VPN regulations in certain parts of the world. Sentinel addresses these challenges through rigorous open-source audits and sophisticated privacy technology.
Future developments on the horizon include the beta launch of its AI Data Layer, enabling crowdsourcing of training data. Additionally, plans for expanding into decentralized content delivery networks and integrating Internet of Things (IoT) devices are anticipated for 2026.
Sentinel (P2P) has successfully transitioned from a niche dVPN project into a foundational protocol within the decentralized bandwidth marketplace landscape. By emphasizing an open-source ethos and leveraging the interoperability of the Cosmos ecosystem, Sentinel is well-positioned to support the development of next-generation internet infrastructure. As decentralized networks continue to gain momentum, Sentinel’s focus on privacy and resource democratization represents a scalable alternative to centralized technology solutions.
In the early days before the existence of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) marketplaces, buying or selling cryptocurrencies was a tedious task.
