I. Project Introduction

1. What Is Canton Network?

Canton Network is an institutional-grade privacy public chain. It is specifically designed for regulated financial institutions, featuring highly configurable privacy protection mechanisms that allow banks, exchanges, funds, and other organizations to collaborate safely on-chain. Canton supports various scenarios including asset tokenization, collateral management, cross-border settlement, and institutional-grade DeFi. It has become a core network driving the full transition of traditional finance on-chain and enabling 24/7 settlement.

2. How Does Canton Network Operate?

The core modules of Canton are as follows:

1) Sub-ledgers and Global Synchronizer Layer: Each institution maintains an independent sub-ledger to control its own data and validation. The Global Synchronizer layer handles cross-ledger communication and atomic settlement, achieving network-wide interoperability with privacy protection.

2) Daml Smart Contract Language: Combines ZKP (Zero-Knowledge Proof) and MPC (Multi-Party Computation) technologies to implement "need-to-know" data access. Data is only visible to relevant participants; other parties cannot access the business payload. This achieves high-level privacy that meets compliance requirements across different jurisdictions.

3) Canton Coin (CC) Token System: Supports network fee settlement and incentive distribution through a Burn-and-Mint Equilibrium (BME) mechanism.

3. Who Created Canton Network?

Canton Network was developed and promoted by the Digital Asset team, with Co-founder and CEO Yuval Rooz serving as a key driver. The network was announced in May 2023 by a consortium of leading financial institutions and technology companies, including BNP Paribas, Goldman Sachs, DTCC, Deutsche Börse, and others. It is currently governed by the Canton Foundation (formerly the Global Synchronizer Foundation), an independent non-profit organization established in July 2024 under the Linux Foundation. It is responsible for coordinating Super Validators and overseeing governance decisions.

4. Canton Network Tokenomics

Canton Coin (CC) is the native utility token of the network, designed to align incentives by rewarding actual network usage rather than speculation.

The token features a fair launch: there was no pre-mining, no pre-sale, and no allocations for VCs or founders. The total supply adjusts dynamically based on actual demand.

Reward Distribution: A "mining round" occurs every 10 minutes. Rewards are distributed based on contribution value to three types of participants: Super Validators (operating the Global Synchronizer), Validators (providing network access), and Application Builders (running applications and services). The reward pool follows a fixed emission curve (including a halving mechanism) and is divided among the three groups.

The foundation itself is funded through a programmatic allocation of 5% of future emissions. Overall, the tokenomics are designed to tie network success directly to real utility.

5. Timeline & Key Milestones

May 2023: Canton Network is officially announced.

2024: Global Synchronizer Mainnet goes live. Subsequently, the network conducts several RWA (Real World Asset) tokenization pilots, including large-scale tokenized asset tests, exploration of U.S. Treasury bonds as on-chain collateral, and multi-asset tokenization applications, achieving 24/7 on-chain liquidity support for Treasuries and stablecoins.

February 2025: Launched the first phase of the Global Collateral Network project with Euroclear.

June 2025: Nasdaq's Calypso platform integrates with Canton Network to support automated 24/7 margin and collateral management workflows.

July 2025: Goldman Sachs and BNY Mellon launch a tokenized Money Market Fund (MMF) solution based on Canton Network. Utilizing the Goldman Sachs Digital Asset Platform (GS DAP) to record client MMF ownership, this advances the tokenization and on-chain availability of the approximately $7.1 trillion money market industry.

August 2025: The institutional-grade Bitcoin solution CBTC (a 1:1 pegged wrapped Bitcoin) officially launches on Canton Network to be used as institutional-grade collateral.​
