Memecoins Wiped Out As 11.6 Million Tokens Fail In Brutal Year: Research
According to CoinGecko research, approximately 11.6 million memecoins and low-effort tokens failed or became inactive in 2025, a dramatic increase compared to the 1.3 million failures in 2024. The majority of these losses occurred in the fourth quarter, driven by a major market sell-off on October 10 that triggered over $19 billion in liquidations. Tokens with low liquidity and weak development were hit hardest, as a flood of new coins created via simplified launch tools met collapsing demand. While more established tokens survived, many small projects were abandoned, leading to extreme volatility and widespread delistings. The event has sparked calls for better oversight and warning labels for speculative tokens, highlighting the risks of investing in assets without liquidity or real use cases.
