Bitcoin Survives 68 Cable Failures With Near-Zero Price Impact, Study Finds
A new study from the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance reveals that 87% of 68 undersea internet cable failures between 2014 and 2025 had minimal impact on the Bitcoin network, disrupting fewer than 5% of nodes. The price impact was negligible, with a statistically insignificant correlation coefficient of -0.02. The research indicates that a catastrophic 72-92% of global submarine cables would need to fail to knock over 10% of nodes offline. However, targeted attacks on high-traffic chokepoints could cause significant disruption with only 5-20% of cables cut. The widespread use of Tor, which obscures 64% of nodes, adds a layer of protection by complicating efforts to map and target the network.
