Has the market really not bottomed yet?

Looking at post-halving cycles, this idea actually carries some weight. In both 2016 and 2020, Bitcoin [$BTC] tended to bottom around 875 to 917 days after the halving. That timing lines up pretty closely with the big drawdowns we saw, about 73% in the 2018 cycle and around 64% in 2022.

If that pattern holds, it would suggest we might still be early in the current cycle. From the technical standpoint, we’re only about 750 days into the 2024 halving cycle, which could mean the true bottom hasn’t formed yet. So the real question is: Are we still due for a deeper correction before the next major leg up?

Looking at how the market is shaping up in May, the thesis gets a bit more weight.

In March and April, Bitcoin has already posted close to 15% total upside. But some traders think that momentum could cool off this month, since $BTC has rarely managed three straight strong monthly closes in past bear-like phases. And based on post-halving cycle behavior, Bitcoin could still be sitting in that “in-between” zone, despite the strong Q2 run so far.

That said, looking back at previous halving cycles, there’s a key divergence.

Unlike the 2017 cycle’s 1300%+ rally and the 2021 cycle’s 60% move, the 2025 leg actually closed down around -6.3%. Normally, post-halving phases tend to kick off strong scarcity-driven upside, but this cycle has already shown some deviation from that pattern. Which raises the bigger question: Will the 2026 cycle diverge from the typical 2018 and 2022-style bear market structure?
Zooming out, Bitcoin’s 2026 cycle is still down 7.5%, broadly in line with typical post-halving behavior.

But zooming in, on-chain data is showing a different picture. Accumulation signals remain strong, with whale spot trade sizes trending higher, suggesting

Strategy has purchased another 535 BTC for approximately $43 million at an average price of $80,340 per bitcoin, bringing its total holdings to 818,869 BTC.

The latest acquisitions were funded by proceeds from the issuance and sale of the company’s Class A common stock, MSTR, and perpetual preferred stock, STRC.

Bitcoin treasury company Strategy acquired an additional 535 BTC for approximately $43 million at an average price of $80,340 per bitcoin between May 4 and May 10, according to an 8-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday.

Strategy now holds a total of 818,869 BTC — worth around $66.5 billion — bought at an average price of $75,540 per bitcoin for a total cost of around $61.9 billion, including fees and expenses, according to the company's co-founder and executive chairman, Michael Saylor.

Notably, Strategy's holdings are the equivalent of more than 3.9% of bitcoin's 21 million supply cap and imply around $4.6 billion of paper gains at current prices.

The latest acquisitions were made using proceeds from at-the-market sales of its Class A common stock, MSTR, and perpetual Stretch preferred stock, STRC. Last week, Strategy sold 231,324 MSTR shares for approximately $42.9 million. As of May 10, $26.35 billion worth of MSTR shares remain available for issuance and sale under that program, the firm said. Strategy also sold 1,412 STRC shares for approximately $0.1 million, with $19.46 billion worth of shares remaining available for issuance and sale under that program.

According to blockchain analytics platform Arkham Intelligence, a Bitcoin whale wallet that had been inactive for approximately 12 years has become active again. The address reportedly transferred 500 BTC, worth approximately $40.6 million, to a new wallet.

According to the data, the transfer was made from the address “1KAA8…d882j” to the address “bc1qm…hjrxy”. It was stated that the Bitcoins in the wallet had not been moved since November 27, 2013.

When the whale investor first acquired the 500 Bitcoins, their total value was estimated to be only about $457,000. With current prices, the value of the assets has increased approximately 89 times, exceeding $40 million. Experts note that such prolonged periods of inactivity in wallets are often associated with preparations for sale or new wallet transfers for security purposes.

Institutional demand for crypto is real, and suggests there may be a sustained bitcoin price move above its pivotal 200-day simple moving average (SMA).

Investors poured $858 million into crypto funds issued by asset managers like BlackRock and 21Shares last week, extending a five-week inflow streak and marking the strongest weekly total since late April, according to CoinShares.

More importantly, bitcoin funds alone pulled in over $700 million, taking year-to-date flows to $4.9 billion. Talk about the demand for the leading cryptocurrency. The catalyst? Improving sentiment around the Clarity Act, according to CoinShares' head of research, James Butterfill.

Bitcoin recently traded at $81,000, having narrowly missed the 200-day SMA positioned above $82,000 late Sunday. That's the second such near miss since last week. Prices remain above $80,000, indicating that bulls are simply taking a breather, not retreating.

Analysts say the next big leg higher could unfold once prices top $82,000, effectively rising above the 200-day SMA, which is largely seen as a barometer of long-term trends.

"The clean next step is a daily close above $82,000 with steady spot demand. Without that, it can chop between $79,000 and $82,000 while macro sets the tone," analysts at Marex said.

On the downside, immediate support is seen around $80,400, and the broader demand zone remains between $78,200 and $78,600., according to Vikram Subburaj, CEO of India-based Giottus.com, said in an email.

In the broader market, Sui blockchain’s $SUI has surged 12% to $1.26 in 24 hours. The rally comes as developers behind the blockchain look to foray into privacy. Adeniyi Abiodun, co-founder and chief product officer of Mysten Labs, the development team behind Sui, posted on X that confidential transactions on Sui will be introduced this year, enabling fee-free privacy-preserving payments at scale.
