The Gray Market Has Set Its Sights on Changpeng Zhao
CZ, founder of Binance, recently encountered a coordinated disinformation campaign involving AI-generated images. A fake photo circulated on social media showed him posing with a user claiming to be a long-term BNB supporter. CZ identified multiple inconsistencies: the shirt he wore was not his, the background was fabricated, and image resolution varied unnaturally. The account, with 863k followers, had previously blocked him and showed a suspicious shift from non-crypto to BNB-focused content.
CZ warned that such manipulated content, including fake legal notices, is designed to build false trust or enable scams. He emphasized the need for better critical thinking to avoid falling for obvious forgeries. Binance co-founder He Yi also commented, urging people to verify sources and improve risk assessment skills.
Simultaneously, Bitcoin and BNB prices fell over 26% from mid-January to early February, amid extreme market fear. The incident highlights how AI-generated visuals are exploited to create false affiliations, accelerate trust-building for malicious purposes, and leverage celebrity influence for traffic and financial gain. CZ noted patterns suggesting organized manipulation rather than organic behavior. The rise of AI amplifies existing risks in crypto, making media literacy and verification more crucial than ever.
