Bitcoin.com integrates USDU — a U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin registered with the Central Bank of the UAE — into its non-custodial web and mobile wallet.
USDU is issued by Abu Dhabi-based company Universal Digital. It is the first and currently only foreign payment token registered under the UAE Central Bank's Payment Token Services Regulation. Universal's activities are also regulated by the Abu Dhabi Global Market Financial Services Regulatory Authority, and the company is authorized to issue tokens pegged to fiat currencies.
According to an announcement made on Wednesday, users will be able to store, send, and receive the Ethereum-network stablecoin through the wallet. Exchange and buy/sell functions are expected to be added later by third-party providers.
Bitcoin.com stated that it plans to accept USDU as payment for certain services and is working on enabling payments between users and merchants in its products. Availability will depend on jurisdiction.
Universal launched USDU in January. The country's Payment Token Services Regulation permits payments for digital assets and derivatives on them to be made only in fiat currency or a registered foreign payment token.
The Bitcoin.com integration followed an expansion of USDU's distribution. In July, Zodia Custody added support for the stablecoin, allowing institutional clients to store and transfer it, and in August, a USDT–USDU liquidity pool was launched on Uniswap, providing the token with decentralized liquidity.
