EU Lawmakers Vote Down Green Crypto Mining Study

08/31 19:17

EU lawmakers have rejected a Green Party proposal to study alternatives to the proof-of-work (PoW) mining that underpins Bitcoin (BTC). The Greens' effort followed a failed attempt by some members of the European Parliament to impose restrictions on the energy-intensive PoW consensus mechanism, which some have described as a Bitcoin ban. Ernest Urtasun, the Spanish member of the Parliamentary Green Caucus, told the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee that he was "disappointed" by the decision of chief lawmaker Stéphanie Yon-Courtin to effectively kill the idea by withdrawing his support. Urtasun said the green proposal would never interfere with the separate legislation known as the Market Regulation of Crypto Assets (MiCA). the amendment proposed by Urtasun said there was evidence that crypto assets cause significant damage to the climate and the environment, and it called for €800,000 in public funding to be committed to developing a scientific method to measure the environmental impact of mining and identify greener alternatives .
