Bitcoin drops to $78,000 as rate hike fears trigger massive $550M long flush

A major liquidation event targeting long orders flushed massive leverage across the digital asset market overnight, forcing Bitcoin down near the $78,000 mark. The world’s leading crypto was trading at $78,030.1 as of 05:51 ET (09:51 GMT).

The sharp downturn tracked a broader global bond selloff and the worst single-session performance for U.S. equities since March, catching heavily leveraged bullish traders off guard.

Bitcoin (BTC) fell roughly 3.2% over a 24-hour window according to Investing.com data, settling near $78,000 during Asian morning hours on Saturday. The drop effectively erased all market gains from the preceding seven days, during which the asset briefly traded above $82,000. 

Data compiled by CoinGlass revealed that $581 million in digital asset positions were liquidated within 24 hours, with an overwhelming 95%, approximately $552 million, wiped from leveraged long bets. 

Bitcoin led the individual losses with $189 million in liquidations, followed by Ether (ETH) at $151 million, while the single largest automated liquidation order occurred on the Bitget exchange via a $21.59 million BTCUSDT position.

The synchronized selloff developed as traditional global macro markets reacted to back-to-back elevated Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI) prints earlier in the week.

Combined with elevated crude oil prices exceeding $105 per barrel due to the ongoing Iran conflict and shipping restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz, the sticky inflation data forced bond and equity traders to adjust expectations away from Federal Reserve rate cuts toward potential rate hikes. 

The broader financial shift pushed U.S. 10-year Treasury yields past 4.5%.

A new global financial crisis is not confirmed, but the path toward one is now visible enough to map.

The sequence starts with debt and oil before it reaches credit. Long-end sovereign yields and Brent crude are already close enough to stress levels to make the policy squeeze urgent.

To close out the week, the US 30-year Treasury yield was near 5.109%, the UK 30-year gilt was near 5.857%, Brent was near $108.54, and the VIX was near 18.53.

Those numbers point to a market moving toward the part of the map where a bond shock and an oil shock can start forcing other markets to respond.

The distinction is practical. A 30-year Treasury yield above 5.25%, a UK 30-year gilt above 6%, or sustained Brent above $115 would all worsen the debt-service and inflation problem.

But a 2008-style event needs more than expensive government debt and energy. It needs stress to migrate into credit, volatility, financial conditions, funding markets, and forced selling.

The broad data still shows a different picture. US high-yield option-adjusted spreads were still only 2.82% on May 13, below the long-term average of 5.19%.

A later FRED update put the same credit-spread family at 2.76% for May 14. The Chicago Fed National Financial Conditions Index was still -0.524 for the week ending May 8, and negative NFCI readings indicate looser-than-average financial conditions.

That leaves markets in a split state: the warning signals are close, but the confirmation signals have not arrived
