Bitcoin is trading near $68,900, a level that reflects one of the most extraordinary wealth creation stories in modern financial history. But the real scale of that transformation becomes clear when looking back at 2010, when Bitcoin was still an obscure experiment trading for just a few cents.

So what would $1,000 invested in Bitcoin in 2010 be worth today?

The Math Behind a 2010 Bitcoin Investment

In mid-2010, Bitcoin traded for roughly $0.08 per coin. At that price, a $1,000 investment would have purchased approximately 12,500 $BTC.

At today’s price near $68,900 per $BTC, those 12,500 coins would now be worth $861,250,000. That means a $1,000 investment in Bitcoin in 2010 would be worth approximately $861 million today.

Even if purchased slightly later in 2010 at higher prices, such as $0.30, the return would still exceed $229 million. Few assets in history have delivered comparable long-term gains.

The Rise of Satoshi Nakamoto’s Net Worth

The same price appreciation has dramatically increased the theoretical net worth of Bitcoin’s anonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.

Blockchain researchers estimate that Satoshi mined between 600,000 and 1.1 million $BTC during Bitcoin’s first year. A move by US Senate Democrats and Republicans to pass a wide-ranging housing bill. They added a new section that prohibits the Federal Reserve from launching a retail central bank digital currency, or CBDC. The section of the bill would prevent the Fed from launching a digital version of the US dollar, or a digital dollar, until at least 2031 if it is accessible to the public.

The section prohibiting the Fed from launching a CBDC was added to the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act. This is a bill focused on housing legislation but that touches on financial technology policy. The addition of the CBDC prohibition to a housing bill was a surprise to some. As the past debates have focused on CBDC policy in finance legislation.

According to the provision, the Federal Reserve would need permission from Congress to issue a CBDC to consumers. The reason for the requirement, based on the rationale provided by the advocates, was that it would prevent the Fed from issuing digital currency without permission. The ban does not stop the Fed from continuing to research and experiment with digital currency concepts.

The focus of the ban is on public issuance and use of digital currency by individuals or businesses. The lawmakers have set a date in the future to sunset the ban. This created a debate about whether it is enough time to allow for technological advances in the field. The inclusion of the bill in the housing legislation may require lawmakers to consider digital currency in the context of housing affordability.

U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs recorded $458.2 million in net inflows on March 2, according to SoSoValue data. BlackRock’s IBIT led with $263.2 million, while seven other funds including Fidelity and Grayscale recorded inflows with no funds experiencing outflows.

The return of inflows comes amid heightened global instability and persistent U.S.-Iran tensions following joint U.S. and Israeli strikes. The session marks a continuation of the trend that began last week when ETFs recorded $787 million in weekly inflows, ending five consecutive weeks of negative flows. In January and February combined, the ETFs witnessed over $1.8 billion in net outflows before the reversal.

The timing of the inflows and heavy concentration in BlackRock’s IBIT suggests coordinated buying among large allocators such as pension funds and endowments.
