YZi Labs, an independent investment firm led by Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, has invested in onchain trading terminal Genius Trading, highlighting growing investor attention on cross-chain trading infrastructure.

While financial terms were not disclosed, YZi Labs said Tuesday that it made an eight-figure investment in the company. Zhao is also joining Genius Trading as an advisor, according to the announcement.

The investment suggests that cross-chain trading terminals are increasingly being viewed as core market infrastructure rather than purely user-facing tools, as activity continues to spread across multiple blockchains and liquidity venues. 

Genius Trading is not a decentralized exchange, but a trading interface designed to aggregate execution across blockchains and decentralized venues. SEC Chairman Paul Atkins told Fox Business last December that he expected U.S. financial markets to move on-chain “within a few years.” This statement falls somewhere between prophecy and policy directive, especially coming from the architect of the “crypto project,” the Commission’s formal initiative to enable tokenized market infrastructure. However, what does “on-chain” mean when applied to $67.7 trillion in public stocks, $30.3 trillion in Treasury bonds, and $12.6 trillion in daily repo exposure? Which parts can truly move first? The answer needs to be precise. “On-chain” isn’t a single thing: it’s a four-layer stack, with much of what Atkins describes residing in the middle layers, rather than the DeFi-native endpoints envisioned by crypto Twitter. Four Flavors of On-Chain The gap between tokenization wrappers and full lifecycle automation determines what’s possible two versus twenty years from now, so definition is important. The first layer is issuance and representation: tokens represent the underlying securities, but the pipeline remains traditional. Think of digitized stocks.  Atkins explicitly defines tokenization as smart contracts representing securities still subject to SEC rules, not parallel asset classes. The second layer is the recording and transfer of rights: the "who owns what" ledger moves via the blockchain, but settlement still occurs through existing clearinghouses. The DTCC's December 11 no-action letter from the SEC's Department of Trading and Markets authorizes this model. Depository trusts can now issue "tokenized rights" to participants via an approved blockchain. However, this offer only applies to registered wallets. Cede & Co. remains the legal owner and does not allocate any initial collateral or settlement value. Translation: On-chain custody and 24/7 transfers will occur tomorrow without replacing NSCC net settlement
