Most harm done to consumers in the crypto space has come not from the tokens themselves, but from the platforms handling them — the exchanges, custodians, lenders, and yield services.

That finding sits at the center of a new paper delivered this week by Rhys Bollen, the head of fintech at the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, who argues Australia should stop treating digital assets as something categorically new and start applying the financial laws already on the books.

Regulating What It Does, Not What It’s Called
Bollen made the case at the Melbourne Money and Finance Conference, where he argued that crypto tokens should be judged by their economic function. A token that acts like a security should be treated as one. A stablecoin that moves money should fall under payments law.

Consumer protection rules should pick up whatever else remains. His argument strips away the technological wrapping and asks a simpler question: what does this thing actually do?

Crypto-Specific Law
That framing puts Australia at odds with how other countries have gone about it. The US is pushing the CLARITY Act, a purpose-built crypto framework. The European Union has rolled out its Markets in Crypto-Assets rules, known as MiCA. Both create dedicated regulatory structures for digital assets.

Bollen’s position, by contrast, is that building a separate system from scratch misses the point — and leaves gaps that bad actors will find.

“Opportunities for regulatory arbitrage” is how Bollen describes those gaps. Build a crypto-specific law, and someone will structure a product to fall outside it. Attach crypto to existing law based on what the product does, and that exit shrinks.

Bitcoin - Derivatives flash 'mixed signals, but is $72K a real possibility?

Bitcoin recently broke above the $70,000 range, a move the market initially interpreted as bullish. The breakout occurred on 02 March, marking the first time the asset reclaimed that level since 16 February.

However, the aforementioned momentum proved short-lived.

Bitcoin [BTC] has since slipped back below, with BTC valued at around $68,000 at press time. The pullback is indicative of the presence of conflicting signals across the derivatives market, leaving the broader outlook for Bitcoin somewhat divided.

Options market signals calm conditions

The Options market has been exhibiting a period of relative calm as far as Bitcoin's price expectations are concerned.

One of the clearest indicators came from the crypto's implied volatility, with the same suggesting that traders are not preparing for a significant price swing in the near term.

According to Glassnode, implied volatility fell well below the highs seen in February. This decline suggested that traders expect only limited price movement in the short term. Such conditions typically occur when implied volatility sits within the 40-60% range - A zone where Options become relatively inexpensive.

At the same time, the Options skew fell from around 20% to roughly 10%, pointing to a more balanced demand between call and Put Options.

In practical terms, this means that traders might not be strongly positioned for either an upside breakout or a sharp downside move. In most market environments, skew tends to reflect clear defensive hedging or aggressive

Solana exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have seen record demand from institutions, according to Bloomberg analysts. Wall Street giants like Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are among the institutions with the highest exposure to Solana, per 13F filings. The demand has led to a surge in Solana ETF inflows, with net assets nearing $1 billion. According to an X post by James Seyffart, Solana ETFs are attracting significant attention from Wall Street. The analyst created a list of the top buyers of these ETFs, revealing that investment banks such as Goldman Sachs are not being left behind.Per the post, Goldman holds 864,387 SOL tokens, with the second-highest Solana ETF exposure. Morgan Stanley also holds 123,167 SOL, while the VanEck Associates Corporation holds 55,758 tokens. Some of the top holders also include market makers such as Jane Street. Following this disclosure, it is evident that 50% of holders of Solana ETFs are institutions, and, according to a Bloomberg analyst, this signals a healthy trend for the products, even though they have yet to attract the same inflows as Bitcoin ETFs. “13Fs account for 50% of the AUM. Charles Hoskinson says Cardano’s 2026 budget debate is no longer really about whether the ecosystem should fund itself, but how. In a March 10 video, the Cardano founder argued the network has spent too long overweighting infrastructure while underinvesting in the applications, user experience and narrative needed to turn technical capacity into adoption.

Hoskinson framed the ecosystem as three layers: infrastructure, utility and experience. Infrastructure covers the core rails: nodes, languages and scaling components such as Hydra while utility is the actual DApp and DeFi stack, and experience is the user-facing layer of wallets, onboarding, content and brand. His argument was that Cardano has historically lived too heavily in the first category.

“Historically, Catalyst and the Cardano treasury was over represented here and under represented here,” he said, referring to infrastructure versus utility and experience. “Not enough money for experiences, not enough money for utility [...] there’s not a lot of money for the content creators. There’s not a lot of money for the people actually building the interfaces into Cardano utilities.”

That imbalance, in Hoskinson’s telling, now collides with a harsher reality: many applications are not performing well enough to sustain themselves. He pointed to monthly active users, total value locked, daily transactions and revenue as the relevant scorecard, then delivered a blunt assessment of the current state of the ecosystem.

“All of these on Cardano, they’re not doing well. You’re lying if you say they are,” he said. “There are a lot of DApps and DeFi in the Cardano ecosystem that are losing money. They don’t have a lot of users. They don’t have a lot of TVL.”
