Is Bitcoin’s Recent Rally Healthy, or Is It a Trap?Bitcoin has surged from around $63,000 to near $80,000 in the past week, and the on-chain analytics platform Glassnode points out that this recent rise is not simply due to low liquidity. According to Glassnode, aggressive buying in spot markets, increased trading volumes, strengthening liquidity, and institutional demand indicate that real capital inflows are behind Bitcoin’s surge.

Glassnode’s assessment stated that Bitcoin had strongly broken out of its previous trading range and managed to stay near its peak levels despite brief consolidations. The increase in trading volume and market depth indicated that the rise was supported by a more meaningful capital allocation, rather than a temporary bounce stemming from weak market conditions.

Data from derivative markets also indicates that investors are shifting to a more aggressive risk stance. Glassnode reported that taker flows in perpetual futures have strongly shifted in favor of buyers, and cumulative volume indicators have risen above the upper statistical bands.

However, it was also noted that the amount of open positions in futures contracts expanded to high levels. According to the platform, this indicates a significant increase in speculative participation and leverage use in the market.

A similar strengthening is seen on the institutional investor side. The fact that the trading volumes and weekly net inflows of spot Bitcoin ETFs have significantly exceeded historical thresholds indicates that institutional demand is actively participating in the recent bull ru

US Debt Creates a Costly Feedback Loop

Rising federal interest costs could intensify financial-market pressure without an economic downturn or new emergency, Devere Group CEO Nigel Green warned on Aug. 24. He argued that borrowing required to finance existing interest expenses creates larger future obligations as older, lower-cost debt matures and is refinanced at higher rates.

Green explained:

“This is arithmetic, not sentiment. Interest is compounding faster than the economy generating the revenue to pay it, so every dollar borrowed to cover last year’s interest bill creates a larger interest bill this year, regardless of who sits in the White House or what the Federal Reserve decides next.”

Official Treasury figures show that total public debt outstanding stood at approximately $40.03 trillion on Aug. 20. About $32.28 trillion was held by the public, including investors and institutions, while approximately $7.75 trillion represented intragovernmental holdings involving federal accounts and trust funds.

CBO Raises Its 2026 Deficit Estimate

The federal outlook has worsened since the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) published its February baseline. The agency now estimates a $2.1 trillion deficit for fiscal 2026, $200 billion above the $1.9 trillion projected on Feb. 11, after cutting its revenue estimate on weaker tariff collections.

CBO said on Aug. 20 that trade policy changes through July 31 add another $0.9 trillion to projected deficits across 2027 through 2036. Its February baseline had debt held by the public rising from 101% of gross domestic product this year to 120% by 2036, with the annual deficit reaching $3.1 trillion — figures the agency has not yet restated.

U.S. Treasury Targets Iranian Digital Assets Link In Operation Economic Outcast

The U.S. is targeting the Iranian regime’s continued use of digital assets to sidestep traditional sanctions, including these tools as a top priority in its economic onslaught plan to cripple Iran’s economy.

On Monday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent launched Operation Economic Outcast, defined as “an unprecedented, whole-of-government, economic campaign against the Islamic Republic of Iran and its enablers.” The campaign seeks to sever the economic lifelines of the Iranian regime in several key fields, targeting nations and individuals doing business with the Iranian government.

“Any entity that facilitates money laundering or sanctions evasion on behalf of Iran risks being cut off from the U.S. financial system,” the Treasury stated, explaining that the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) can now “sanction any person, regardless of where they are located,” operating in several sectors in the Iranian economy, including digital assets.

As part of the first wave of actions, the Treasury is sanctioning a cyber group of Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) that has perpetrated crypto heists. Mojtaba Ghal’eh-Kuhi, Behzad Mesri, Keyvan Fayyaz Ghareh Blagh, Saber Shahbazi Balujeh, Mohammad Reza Kadkhoda’i, and Arman Kahzadian are all mentioned as threat actors that have targeted U.S. institutions and companies and even executed digital asset heists.

The countries most affected by these sanctions are China, which purchases Iranian oil; Iraq and Turkey, which purchase Iranian gas for power generation; India, Russia, and others. Nonetheless, even as Bessent explained that China was not exempt from these sanctions, the extent to which the Trump administration will apply these restrictions remains to be seen.

A Truth Social post published by Trump on Aug. 24 said the United States would raise tariffs on all Canadian cars, trucks, automotive parts and steel to 50% at the start of 2027.

Negotiators did not resolve several points, including whether tariff relief would cover medium- and heavy-duty trucks. With no agreement in place, Trump increased the pressure on Ottawa through his latest tariff threat.
