Animoca Brands Acquires Somo to Expand Web3 Collectibles Push


The deal aligns with a sharp early-2026 NFT market rebound.Animoca Brands has moved to strengthen its position in digital collectibles after acquiring gaming and collectibles studio Somo, expanding its footprint in Web3-native entertainment.The company said Wednesday that Somo will be integrated into Animoca’s broader Web3 ecosystem, adding a lineup of playable, streamable and tradable digital collectibles to its portfolio of blockchain-based platforms.Animoca plans to support the expansion through cross-promotion, shared infrastructure and access to its global network of partners across gaming, media and digital assets.


“SOMO is building the cultural operating system for collectibles, which complements our existing portfolio,” Animoca Brands co-founder and executive chairman Yat Siu said.


“By bringing SOMO into the Animoca Brands ecosystem, we aim to connect it to our global network of games, communities, and partners.”


The acquisition comes as the non-fungible token market recorded a sharp rebound at the start of 2026.


Data from CoinGecko shows the total NFT market capitalization climbed about 20% in the first two weeks of the year, rising from roughly $2.5 billion on Jan. 1 to more than $3 billion by mid-January.


The move marked one of the strongest short-term recoveries for NFTs in over a year, following a prolonged downturn that weighed on prices and trading activity throughout much of 2025.


CoinGecko data indicates that a large share of the gains occurred in a single 24-hour window, when the market added around $300 million in value alongside an 18.7% jump in daily trading volume.


Market participants pointed to renewed interest in established NFT collections, a pickup in high-value sales and the release of new token-linked NFT drops as drivers behind the surge.

Data for January 9 indicates a notable cooling period for the market’s primary assets. Bitcoin ETFs recorded a net outflow of 3,826 BTC within a single day. When viewed through a broader lens, the seven-day aggregate shows a net outflow of 183 BTC. While the weekly figure is relatively marginal compared to Bitcoin’s total market cap, the daily spike suggests a cautious "wait-and-see" approach from institutional desks, likely driven by macroeconomic uncertainty or profit-taking following recent price action.
Similarly, Ethereum ETFs faced a substantial daily hurdle, posting a net outflow of 58,467 ETH. However, the macro trend for Ethereum remains decidedly bullish. Despite the daily dip, the seven-day net inflow for Ethereum ETFs stands at a robust 342,134 ETH. This discrepancy suggests that while short-term liquidity may be exiting the market, the mid-term institutional appetite for Ethereum—driven by its utility in decentralized finance and the transition to a deflationary supply model—remains resilient.

Net outflows from US spot Bitcoin ETFs for the third day in a row signal a fading of the optimism that reigned at the start of the new year in the digital asset sector. This trend suggests that institutional and retail investors are entering a strategic "risk-off" phase, influenced by both technical factors and changes in the macroeconomic environment.

According to Farside, net outflows from spot Bitcoin ETFs totaled $205.5 million on Thursday, bringing the cumulative net outflow over the three days to approximately $934.8 million. While the seven-day trailing net inflow remains positive at $240.7 million, this sudden shift suggests that the typical "buy the rally" rally of early January has slowed.

 Factors Driving a Tactical Retreat

Analysts believe the current trend reflects a period of tactical position adjustments rather than a collapse in fundamental demand.

Director of Research Sean Dawson notes that ETF investors are currently facing a "perfect storm" of adverse factors. The most significant factor was Bitcoin's failure to break through the $92,000 to $94,000 resistance zone. Furthermore, macroeconomic uncertainty has resurfaced. Rising jobless claims in the US and geopolitical events, particularly the US military action in Venezuela, have forced traders to reassess risk across asset classes. As a result, Bitcoin's year-to-date gains, which peaked at 8% on Wednesday, had nearly halved to 4% by Thursday evening.

Supply Failure and Blockchain Reality

Blockchain data shows that Bitcoin's short-term recovery faces significant challenges.  According to Glassnode data, there is a significant "supply gap" between $92,100 and $117,400.

The cryptocurrency market has shed $120 billion this week after January’s recovery curve stalled. In particular, Bitcoin’s rebound, which was lifted by over $1 billion in ETF inflows, reversed by mid-week.

According to SoSo Value’s data, U.S Spot ETFs saw $729 million in total outflows on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Over the same period, Bitcoin’s price shed over $4,500 and dropped from $94,500 to $90,000 on the price charts.

Fed rate pause ahead?
The market sentiment was further soured by the expectation of a Fed rate pause at the meeting scheduled for 29 January. Over the past two days, the odds of a rate pause rose by 4% to 86.7%.

The Jobs report and inflation data scheduled for 9 and 14 January could further affect the rate cut outlook and drive the market sentiment for risk assets.

However, the current rate pause outlook at 3.50%-3.75% further dragged crypto lower.

However, it must be noted that although BTC fell by 5%, major altcoins dumped even harder during the mid-week retreat.

XRP and ETH cool off
XRP, for example, depreciated by 14% from $2.4 to $2, reversing nearly half of its significant January gains.

Near-term bulls could track the $2-support zone as a possible reversal point. The area also coincided with the 50-day Moving Average (MA) that could reinforce short-term bullish momentum if defended.

However, a break below it could send XRP’s price to the recent lows near $1.80. Here, it’s worth pointing out that the altcoin also saw massive whale interest during the early 2026 recovery – A trend that could trigger a swift reversal if market sentiment improves.

Like BTC, Ethereum’s [ETH] price also dropped by about 6% from $3,300 to $3,000. December’s price action chalked a symmetric triangle pattern that could go either way. However, in the event of a bullish breakout, the immediate target would be $3,600.
