Bitcoin’s $BTC$69,657.53 biggest limitation just got shattered. A new protocol went live Thursday, making it simple to put the largest cryptocurrency directly to work in powerful, yield-generating strategies within the booming world of decentralized finance (DeFi).

OpNet, a new smart-contract protocol, was activated on the Bitcoin blockchain, marking the arrival of DeFi-powering smart contracts that run directly on Bitcoin’s foundational layer. This keeps traders' bitcoin on Bitcoin's mainnet through standard transactions with $BTC as the only fee token.

DeFi powers lending and borrowing activities that allow token holders to earn additional returns on their coin holdings. Holders of tokens native to smart-contract blockchains like Ethereum have always been able to access DeFi seamlessly, because the blockchain itself hosted most of the DeFi industry.

But the promise of DeFi came with a catch: it was closed to bitcoin. Bitcoin owners had to adopt strategies such as wrapping $BTC with centralized services like Bitgo or Coinbase, using bridges to move assets to Ethereum or other chains, or depositing into custodial lending platforms to access the industry. Each step introduced counterparty risks that contradicted Bitcoin's core principle of trustless, self-sovereign money.

OpNet's mainnet debut claims to solve that issue and represents the first time users can access real DeFi applications, such as swapping, staking and token launches, without bridges, wrapped $BTC or leaving Bitcoin's base layer, potentially eliminating the security risks and custody issues that have plagued previous Bitcoin DeFi attempts.

The average crypto hack has cost about $25 million, while median losses have fallen, but extreme exploits have grown larger, according to Immunefi.

A small cluster of major breaches has dominated losses, with the top five accounting for 62% of stolen funds.

Hacked tokens have dropped a median 61% over six months, with roughly 84% failing to recover in that period.
The cost of a crypto hack for protocol builders has settled into a brutal baseline, with about $25 million stolen upfront, followed by a steep and often lasting collapse in token value.

That is the picture emerging from Immunefi’s 2026 State of Onchain Security report, which finds the industry still grappling with persistent vulnerabilities even as some defensive practices improve.

The pace has stabilized rather than slowed, with 94 attacks recorded in 2024 and 97 in 2025, matching the elevated levels seen in prior years. Across 2024 and 2025, 191 publicly disclosed incidents drained $4.67 billion, bringing the five-year total to $11.9 billion across 425 hacks, according to the blockchain analytics provider.

What has shifted, however, is the shape of risk.

The median hack has shrunk to about $2.2 million from $4.5 million in the earlier period, suggesting incremental progress in limiting routine exploits. Yet the average loss remains far higher, near $24.5 million, as outsized breaches skew the totals.

According to Immunefi, the widening gap suggests a market dominated by rare but devastating events. The five largest exploits in 2024–2025 accounted for 62% of all funds stolen, while the top ten made up 73%. 

A single $1.5 billion breach tied to Bybit represented 44% of all losses in 2025 alone and 32% of the two-year total, skewing the data.

Canadian crypto entrepreneur survived a kidnapping attempt Monday night on one of Madrid’s busiest nightlife streets, after witnesses alerted police and helped foil the attack.

The incident occurred at approximately 11 p.m. near the intersection of Calle Claudio Coello and Calle Jorge Juan in the Salamanca district, a hub of high-end restaurants and bars. 

The victim had just left Lobito de Mar, the restaurant owned by chef Dani García, when three men forcibly removed him from the street, pepper-sprayed him, and threw him into a Ford Transit van.

Several pedestrians and residents on nearby balconies immediately called authorities. Spanish National Police tracked the vehicle to Ronda de Toledo, about 15 minutes from the scene, and arrested two of the attackers. One suspect escaped and remains at large, according to reports.

Police identified the arrested suspects as Serbian men, ages 33 and 45, both with no prior criminal record.

Investigators say the attackers had planned the abduction to extract the victim’s cryptocurrency passwords and gain access to his digital assets. The suspects also attempted to steal the Canadian’s €100,000 luxury watch.

Authorities determined the kidnappers had followed the businessman from Barcelona to Madrid, where he had traveled to finalize a cryptocurrency deal. 

The van used in the crime had an altered license plate, rented specifically for the abduction, and contained plastic zip ties and sedative pills, suggesting a premeditated scheme. GPS data recovered from the vehicle indicated the suspects intended to transport the victim to Petrer, a town in Alicante.

Inside the van, the victim was left alone while police focused on detaining the suspects. He freed himself from the zip ties and flagged down a taxi, which took him to La Princesa Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the initial assault. Police recovered firearms from the

De Maere explains that the post-liquidation reset two weeks ago ushered in a period of new price discovery, but without meaningful spot demand, leverage has been driving price movements. This has resulted in sharp swings in both directions, with traders reacting quickly to macroeconomic data rather than building longer-term exposure.
On the macro front, the market shows a split narrative: stronger-than-expected January nonfarm payrolls pushed Treasury yields higher and lowered rate-cut expectations, while a softer January CPI reading of 2.4% eased inflation concerns, sparking a short-lived relief rally. However, De Maere emphasizes that ETF flows remain under pressure, limiting follow-through.
Overall, while Bitcoin has held a key support level, it lacks clear upward momentum. The short-term outlook may continue to see sideways volatility, and investors should remain cautious while monitoring macro-driven opportunities.
