President Donald Trump is heading to Beijing for a face-to-face summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The agenda covers trade imbalances, technology rivalry, and fentanyl precursor flows. But underneath the diplomatic talking points sits a quieter contest that crypto investors should be watching closely.

The US has been moving aggressively on stablecoin regulation. Recent enforcement actions have targeted issuers like Tether, partly in coordination with broader efforts to crack down on illicit fentanyl-related financial flows. When Washington talks about fentanyl precursors coming from China, it is also talking about the payment rails those transactions use, and stablecoins have been flagged as one of them.

China banned most onshore crypto trading and mining years ago, effectively shutting down what was once the world’s largest Bitcoin mining ecosystem. Beijing has been pushing its central bank digital currency, the e-CNY (digital yuan), as a state-controlled alternative to decentralized cryptocurrencies, while China’s blockchain initiatives continue to expand under tight government oversight.

Trump has historically been skeptical, even dismissive, of Bitcoin and crypto more broadly. Yet his administration oversaw a period of significant institutional development for the space, during which major banks began offering custody services, futures products matured, and regulatory frameworks started taking shape.

Mainstream coverage of the summit, including from Fox News, has not explicitly tied the agenda to cryptocurrencies. But structural decisions made around AI export controls, financial surveillance, and cross-border payment systems will set the playing field for crypto’s next chapter. The US has restricted chip exports to China, and China has accelerated domestic semiconductor development.

Kazakhstan gives crypto payments a cautious green light
Kazakhstan claims it has finalized the legalization of crypto transactions in its economy with an updated legislation that entered into force earlier this month.

While cryptocurrency payments are now supposedly legal, too, it has become clear that the fiat tenge remains the only legal tender in direct purchases.

Kazakhstan adopts rules for crypto circulation

Cryptocurrency has been formally recognized in Kazakhstan since the enforcement of the law “On Digital Assets” in 2023. But legal options to transact with it were quite limited.

One could easily buy digital cash or acquire it through mining, but there was almost nowhere to spend it or convert it domestically without breaking the law.

Before the latest push to resolve the issue, Bitcoin had already ceased to be something exotic, as noted by the 24.kz news channel on Wednesday, and many Kazakhstanis were already invested in crypto.

However, trading was only permitted through a handful of exchanges registered at the Astana International Financial Center (AIFC), the fintech hub in the capital city.

As a result, some 95% of the country’s crypto turnover was taking place outside this regulated market, the Tengrinews.kz website remarked last week.

Digital coins were changing hands either within the gray sector of the economy, including in peer-to-peer deals and on unofficial exchanges, or through foreign-based platforms.

Amendments were made to the Digital Assets act at the start of month and bylaws adopted by the National Bank of Kazakhstan (NBK) to bring these flows out of the shadows.

The revamped legislation introduces comprehensive and systemic regulation for cryptocurrency circulation in the Central Asian nation.

That includes a more detailed classification of digital assets, which are now divided into two main types – secured and unsecured.

In the cryptocurrency market, $BNB, Ethereum, and Solana stand out among the largest networks in terms of the number of token-holding wallets, with layer-1 (L1) blockchain networks in particular reaching millions of users.

According to the data, the network with the most users is $BNB Chain with 338.4 million addresses, followed by Ethereum with 311.6 million addresses. Solana ranks third with 171.1 million user addresses.

On the other hand, when the change data for the last 30 days is examined, it is seen that the strongest growth was in $BNB Chain with a 3.9% increase. Solana and Polygon networks also recorded 2% growth, while TRON experienced a slight decrease in the number of users.
