Bitcoin came within a cent of $80,000 on Monday before stalling, extending a rally that has run for four sessions on catalysts that all predate the weekend, while the altcoins that led last week's advance gave back their Sunday peaks.

Nothing new arrived to carry it. No federal agency published a crypto action between Friday and Monday, and the next dated events sit outside the tape: Grayscale's Zcash trust converts to an NYSE Arca-listed ETF on Tuesday, and Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh speaks at Jackson Hole later this week into a rates market pricing a 30% chance of a September increase.

Bitcoin last changed hands at $78,995, up 1.8% over 24 hours and 22.9% over seven days, after trading between $76,718 and $79,955, CoinGecko data shows. Ether was at $2,481, up 0.7% on the day and 29.8% on the week. $XRP fell 2.4% to $1.48 while holding a 47.8% weekly gain; Solana rose 1.3% to $96.82; BNB was flat at $704. Total crypto market value stood at $2.68 trillion, down 0.7% over 24 hours, on $128 billion of volume, with bitcoin dominance at 59.1%.

Bitcoin's high of $79,999.99 on Coinbase left it one cent below a round number it has not traded above since May 15, when it reached $81,650. Monday's close is its highest since May 15, and the token is 37.3% below the $126,080 record it set in October 2025.

The seven-day gain of 22.9% is slightly off Sunday's reading of 23.7%, the strongest rolling week since November 2024. Ether is 29.8% higher over seven days, $XRP 47.8% and Solana 27.5%.

Volume tells the other half. Turnover fell to $128 billion from $158 billion on Friday, a 19% decline, as the move slowed.

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index read 73 on Monday, its highest in two weeks, according to Alternative.me. It stood at 29 on Aug. 14 and crossed out of fear on Aug. 20.

Zcash has made a retreat from an eight-year high on Monday, as it has shed part of the rally that saw the privacy coin go up by over 55% in days after Grayscale moved to convert its Zcash Trust into a US spot exchange-traded fund.

Zcash ($ZEC) rose to over $880 on August 23 before easing. The figures it hit in the past few days are the strongest level it has attained since 2018.

Before it started dropping, the gains it had made over the week were around 66%. However, it is currently trading around $814. The token has a market cap of over $13.7 billion and sits at number 11 on Coinmarketcap’s list of tokens ranked by market value.

While the recent rally is still a far cry from the all-time high of $5,941.80 that the token hit in October 2016, trading is not as thin as it was then.

Roughly a year ago, $ZEC was trading around $40, and it has come a long way since then, having risen by over 1,805%.

Why a privacy-coin ETF would break new ground

The move that lit the fuse was Grayscale’s amended registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The asset manager wants Zcash Trust to be listed on NYSE Arca under the ticker ZCSH as an exchange-traded fund (ETF). The shares are expected to begin trading on or about August 25, should Grayscale get the regulatory sign-off.

Clearing that hurdle would produce the first US ETF tracking a privacy coin, an asset class regulated products have largely avoided.

Zcash has been known for its privacy features, as it uses zero-knowledge cryptography to hide a transaction’s sender, recipient, and amount.

This design has made it appealing to investors who want financial privacy. However, it has been worrying for regulators who see it as a harder-to-trace vehicle for money laundering or sanctions evasion.

Bitcoin rose above $80,000 in Asian morning hours Tuesday, up 4% on the day and over 25% on the week, extending a rally that began with the Treasury's move to expand its bond buybacks.

Positioning is getting stretched, meanwhile. Bitfire Research pointed to a widely watched momentum gauge which compared recent gains against recent losses on a scale of zero to 100, sitting near 78 for bitcoin.

Anything above 70 is usually read as a sign that a price has climbed too far too fast and is due a pause. Bitfire signals selling pressure between $78,500 and $82,000, and buyers likely to step in around $72,400 to $73,500, per a note sent to CoinDesk.

Solana led the majors, up almost 8% to just above $101 and almost 35% over seven days. Ether added over 2% to just under $2,500 and is up almost 32% on the week. BNB rose over 2% to just under $714. XRP gained almost 2% to just above $1.50 and leads all majors on the week at over 52%.

Solana's gains come as validators vote on two proposals that would cut SOL's supply, as CoinDesk reported, one slowing new issuance and one raising daily burns to as much as $800,000. Voting closes Thursday.

Bitcoin’s price revival that began last Wednesday culminated, at least for now, a few hours ago when the asset soared past $80,000 for the first time since mid-May and tapped a multi-month peak above $81,000.

Analysts were quick to pick up the move and outline the next short-term targets of up to $88,000. $BTC’s surge also led to an increase in liquidated short positions as the total value exceeded $260 million in the past 4 hours.

On a daily scale, the liquidations are up to $650 million, with the lion’s share coming from shorts again. Bitcoin is responsible for half of that amount, according to data from CoinGlass



Thus, the primary cryptocurrency gained over $16,000 from its starting point of under $65,000 last Wednesday to just over $81,000 earlier today
