Russian Sanctions-Evasion Crypto Exchange Suspends Operations After $13M Cyberattack

Grinex, a Russian cryptocurrency exchange utilized heavily for sanctions evasion, has suspended operations after losing over 1 billion rubles ($13 million) in what it claims was a massive cyberattack orchestrated by foreign intelligence agencies, The Moscow Times reported on April 16.

“Digital footprints and the nature of the attack indicate an unprecedented level of resources and technologies available exclusively to the structures of unfriendly states. According to preliminary data, the attack was coordinated with the goal of causing direct damage to the financial sovereignty of Russia,” the exchange said in a public statement.
Following the breach, Grinex announced the suspension of its platform and filed a formal police report.

Grinex was launched in 2025 following the crackdown by US authorities on Garantex, another prominent Moscow-based crypto exchange. In addition to rubles and USDT, Grinex serves as the primary trading platform for A7A5, widely considered the first stablecoin pegged directly to the Russian ruble.

Launched by the state-owned, defense-oriented Promsvyazbank and convicted Moldovan banker Ilan Shor, A7A5 has become a crucial tool for Russian cross-border payments under strict Western sanctions, with its turnover reaching $100 billion by early 2026, The Moscow Times wrote.

Due to its role in facilitating the Russian war effort against Ukraine, US and the UK imposed direct sanctions on Grinex in August 2025. British authorities specifically stated that the exchange profited heavily from its cooperation with the Russian government in the financial sector. Its predecessor, Garantex, had been blacklisted by the US in April 2022 for directly facilitating cybercriminals and massive money laundering operations.

Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire has stated that he sees a “big opportunity” for a stablecoin based on the Chinese yuan. In an interview with Reuters, Allaire said that stablecoins are becoming an increasingly important tool in global currency competition and that this technology could support China’s goal of internationalizing the yuan.

According to Allaire, competition in the global financial system has now acquired not only an economic but also a technological dimension. In this context, the development of a yuan-backed stablecoin could make China’s currency more competitive. The Circle CEO stated that China has the potential to launch such a digital asset within the next three to five years.

These statements come amid increasing debate surrounding yuan-based stablecoins. Previously, Chinese tech giants Ant Group and JD.com were reported to have called on the central bank to allow yuan-backed stablecoins.

However, the People’s Bank of China and other regulatory bodies are taking a cautious approach in this area. A statement published in February 2026 explicitly emphasized that issuing yuan-pegged stablecoins abroad without the necessary permits is prohibited.

While cryptocurrency transactions remain banned in mainland China, Hong Kong is taking a more flexible approach. Regulators in the region recently granted stablecoin licenses to two different entities, ushering in a new era for the sector.

According to experts, stablecoins could become a significant part of international competition within the global financial system in the coming years.

Goldman Sachs, the $3.5 trillion banking giant, has filed to launch an actively managed exchange-traded fund (ETF) that uses covered calls to generate income from Bitcoin.

The April 14 filing for the Goldman Sachs Bitcoin Premium Income ETF marks a strategic pivot for the investment bank, which previously had a hostile relationship with the flagship digital asset.

The price increase reflects big changes in where money is flowing and how investors feel. SoSoValue reports that US-based XRP exchange-traded funds saw about $12 million in net inflows in April, a big turnaround from March, when worries about the economy led to over $31 million in outflows.

This demand is not limited to the US. CoinShares data shows that global XRP exchange-traded products have seen about $20 million in net inflows this month.

While institutions are buying, many retail traders on social media seem worn out.

Santiment data shows that negative feelings about XRP, often called fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD), have reached their third-highest point in two years.

In the past, when retail traders were this negative, it often signaled a good buying opportunity. After many gave up during the nine-month decline, analysts now view this as a low-risk time to buy, which is helping drive the current rally.
